Description:

Le Laboratoire Cambridge (www.lelabcambridge.com) is a culture lab in Kendall Square that highlights contemporary experimental works of artists and designers at frontiers of science. Since opening in October of 2014, the Lab has offered exhibitions, seminars, events, concerts, breakthrough products, and culinary experiences to the greater Boston area. Modeled on Le Laboratoire Paris, which was located in the heart of Paris, France from 2007-2015, Le Laboratoire Cambridge is the new home of the Cloud ArtScience Foundation, the cultural innovation organization that in recent years has placed original works of art and design in museum collections and stores around the world, run the international education program the ArtScience Prize, and inspired Café ArtScience, the fine dining restaurant located at Le Laboratoire Cambridge.

Each year, Le Laboratoire Cambridge facilitates cultural experiments between leading artists, designers and scientists that lead to contemporary art exhibitions that are displayed at Le Lab. Often, exhibitions translate beyond their time in the gallery and develop into museum works, humanitarian projects, or commercial products. Collaborations and exhibitions at Le Laboratoire have included such renowned artists and designers as Random International, William Kentridge, Mark Dion, Philippe Starck, Ryoji Ikeda and Mathieu Lehanneur, among many others.

As the first person to interact with our gallery guests and patrons, the Gallery Assistant and Interpreter plays an important role in delivering high quality, interactive gallery experience in line with Le Laboratoire Cambridge’s values. First and foremost, ideal Gallery Assistants view their tours and interpretations as craft, providing each guest with care and an opportunity for nuanced engagement with the work. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and performing a variety of duties, Gallery Assistants also contribute to gallery operations and events, including managing admissions, assisting guests, and tracking visitor information. Additionally, Gallery Assistants will work with Lab staff to facilitate aspects of the exhibitions, including supporting the coordination of the art and design teams and installation and maintenance of the exhibition.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall gallery oversight, ensuring the highest quality visitor experience for guests, security, and smooth functioning of the gallery.
  • Provides direct logistic, administrative, and exhibition support as needed to the Exhibition and Facilities Manager, Gallery Manager, and Lab staff, and aide in preparations for openings, exhibitions and assorted gallery events.
  • Administer and assist in the execution of exhibitions as needed, including troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring the efficient performance of all equipment.
  • Support the Director of External Relations with special events, tours, private functions, and public programs, including event set-up and A/V.
  • Track ongoing evaluation of attendance, gallery programs, reports visitor questions and suggestions, and makes recommendations for program development.
  • As needed special projects in the gallery or Lab staff office, ranging from inventory to development support.
  • Comply with Le Laboratoire’s policies and procedures pertaining to the operation of the gallery.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field and minimum one year of related museum experience required.
  • Experience related to building facilities and operations, including coordinating repairs and maintenance, technology and IT, and various related administrative tasks a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary visual art.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment while remaining visible and approachable to guests.
  • A flexible schedule, including ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Excellent customer service experience skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable to change, and willing to acquire new skills in an evolving work environment.
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to stoop and bend for extended periods of time, routinely walk to and from various parts of the building carrying equipment and other essentials of the job site.

  • This is a part-time position. (This position requires occasional early mornings/late nights and routine Friday/Saturday availability.)

Membership and Development Assistant [Boston Athenæum, Boston, MA]

Description:
Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries and cultural institutions in the United States. The mission of the Boston Athenæum is to serve its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world by preserving and augmenting its collections of books and art, by providing library services and cultural programs, and by preserving and enhancing the unique atmosphere of its landmark building.

The Membership and Development Assistant is primarily responsible for the day-to-day processing of membership and contribution activity. The holder of this position reports to the Manager of Annual Giving and works collaboratively with all members of the Advancement team while assisting with a wide range of membership, annual fund, and other development activities. This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, with full benefits and is classified as “non-exempt.” Some weekend and evening hours are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Membership : (50%)

  • Process all membership applications, renewal payments, and associated recordkeeping
  • Coordinate all monthly in-house mailings (direct mail and email) for Membership renewal notices
  • Responsible for membership renewal cycles
  • Edits card log and prints all permanent membership cards
  • Oversee all aspects of the Membership Ambassador Program.
  • Coordinates the planning and execution of the annual Open House with the Manager of Annual Giving and Coordinator of Member Services.
  • Manages the Membership and Development Intern.
  • Works closely with members and share member insight with department colleagues.

Service/Front of House: (15%)

  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for membership and annual fund inquires, after the Coordinator of Member Services.
  • When needed, lead prospective members on a tour of the Athenæum.
  • Answer the Membership and Development Assistant direct line, as well as the general Membership phone line.
  • Answer member e-mails from his/her personal e-mail address, as well as to the general Membership e-mail address.
  • Assist with staffing of events and the Membership Office (night or weekend shift as required, and additional occasional hours as needed).
  • Effectively communicate information about the Athenæum to members, prospective members, and visitors.

Annual Fund: (30%)

  • Process annual fund gifts and other contributions.
  • Coordinate acknowledgment letters and mailings.

Data Management: (5%)

  • Work closely with the Administrative Assistant to prepare bank deposit reports for the Finance Department.
  • Assists in Raiser’s Edge database management, including data-entry and clean up.

The Membership and Development Assistant may be asked to perform other activities as needed that fall within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong customer service experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and well.
  • Proven accuracy and close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Fully proficient in Word and Excel, including Mail Merge and budgeting
  • Raiser’s Edge software experience strongly preferred
  • Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends.

DOCENT (VOLUNTEER)

Description:
The Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital explores the hospital’s more than 200 years of history and the groundbreaking research happening here today. Volunteer docents greet visitors, lead tours, and demonstrate pieces of technology and artifacts. Docents also have the opportunity to give tours of the hospital’s historic Ether Dome.
Qualifications:
While some of our docents are medical professionals or history buffs, no special background in history, medicine, or science is required! We will train you.
Docents typically have one standing two- or three-hour shift per week; must have some flexibility to cover other shifts. Must be available a minimum of six months. While an apply-by date is required to post a listing on this site, we are always interested in talking with potential docents.
