The Museum of the Aleutians Association, Inc. a non-profit organization that manages and operates the local Museum of the Aleutians in Unalaska, AK, seeks a skilled Director with experience in museum and/or non-profit management.  This professional exempt position has overall responsibility for leadership and management of the Museum. The Museum Director reports directly to the MOTA Board of Directors.  MOTA is an equal opportunity employer.

MOTA’s mission is to collect, preserve and share the rich cultural legacy of the Aleutian Islands Region.  Our goal is to serve multicultural, multigenerational, and international audiences with educational and research opportunities through our exhibits, collections and programs.

OVERALL DUTIES:

  1. Management and maintenance of the physical museum facility, staff, finances and operations.
  2. Ensure the preservation and safety of the museum collections and their appropriate use.
  3. Promote awareness and understanding of the cultural and natural history of the Aleutian Islands region and to interpret, through use of the collection and traveling exhibit materials, the stories they tell.
  4. Create and support a positive museum experience for visitors, and enhance credibility of the museum through community outreach programs and cultivation of professional contacts.

DIRECTOR WILL:

  • Assume overall accountability to the Board of Directors for the operation of the museum:
    • Implement Board policy and Strategic Plan;
    • Present to the Museum Board of Directors and/or its committees periodic reports reflecting the professional services, financial activities, acquisition, loans, transfers and other pertinent information regarding the MOTA collections, exhibitions, publications and programs;
    • Propose policy and policy revisions to the board as needed for the effective and efficient operation of the museum;
    • Prepare a plan for the achievement of MOTA’s specific goals and objectives, periodically review and make recommendations for their revision; and
    • Attend all board meetings and all board advisory committees in person or by appropriate designee.
  • Maintain the public trust properties entrusted to the MOTA in accordance with professional standards of such organizations as the AAM. Ensure the documentation, preservation and safety of the museum
  • Ensure that programs, exhibits, research and public relations opportunities are appropriate for and support the museum’s mission.
  • Ensure maintenance of the physical museum facility in a good, safe state of repair and operating condition and will understand routine and emergency operation procedures of the facility.
  • Recommend appropriate staffing levels to accomplish the museum’s goals, by selecting, hiring, training, supervising, and discharging employees and managing personnel policies and practices for the Museum. Evaluates Individual job performance of museum staff and makes recommendations for improvement as necessary.
  • Fiscal management responsibilities include: grant writing, corporate and foundation requests, fund development, capital projects and special projects, general operations including the museum store; and collaborates with the board to present fundraising events.
  • Prepare and present an annual operations budget. Supervise the business affairs of the MOTA. Approve all expenditures assuring they are within the Board approved budget.
  • Enhance credibility of the museum through public presentations, attendance at professional meetings, and development of professional contacts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the MOTA Board.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess or develop a passion for our local history and demonstrate skills in all aspects of museum operations.

Education:  Advanced degree in Museology or other field related to the museums mission such as history, anthropology, or art. Training in non-profit management or business administration is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in museum work; and some administrative and non-profit experience.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of museum standards and practices and of legal and ethical aspects of museum operation.
  • Specialized knowledge in at least one area of the museum’s collections. Experience with and knowledge of Aleutian Islands heritage, history, art, culture and natural sciences is a plus.
  • Ability to implement the policy established by the museum board and to encourage active participation by the board, museum staff, and the public in realizing the objectives and goals of the museum.
  • Excellent public relations, oral and written communication skills including grant writing. Ability to effectively relate with a wide range of audiences including funders.

Museum Collections

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, recently voted Best U.S. Museum (based on Yelp reviews),  is recognized as one of the world’s finest encyclopedic art museums with collections encompassing more than 33,500 art objects, including masterpieces from diverse world cultures spanning 5,000 years of history. Well known for the arts of China and also Japan, South and Southeast Asia, the museum also holds significant European art, American art, American Indian art, African art and a magnificent photography collection. In addition, the Nelson-Atkins boasts strong modern and contemporary collections with a major emphasis on sculpture that supports the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park, which includes over 30 monumental works. The encyclopedic collection represents a pinnacle of artistic achievement and serves as evidence of humankind’s history, religions, philosophies, aspirations, and daily lives.

Basic Function

The Senior Curator, European Arts provides leadership to the department in strategy, financial management, staff development, exhibitions and programming, and is also is responsible for professional practices such as acquisitions, research interpretation and presentation.  The position guides, supervises, and evaluates all full-time and part-time staff assigned to the European Arts department.

A key component of the role is to be able to foster a sense of teamwork among members of the European Arts staff as well as with other staff of the museum. The Senior Curator, European Arts must be an articulate and enthusiastic advocate of the museum and work effectively to promote the mission of the museum throughout the wider community and with all museum constituencies. This means the incumbent must exhibit excellent judgment and communications skills while dealing with individuals with widely varying backgrounds and styles.

About the European Arts Department

The European Arts department consists of galleries and collections related to Ancient Art, Architecture, Design and Decorative Arts, and European Paintings and Sculpture, with curatorial staff to support these collections.

The Ancient galleries were reinstalled in 2010 and feature a remarkable Egyptian sarcophagus known as Meretites, along with items that were part of the funerary assemblage. Since opening, the Egyptian galleries have been the most visited in the museum. Also featured is the collection of Near Eastern, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art, representing almost every genre and media in the ancient world.

The Decorative Arts collection includes about 5,500 objects, from the 13th century to the present. As part of the reinstallation process, decorative arts are fully integrated into the appropriate collections galleries, offering a greater understanding of the culture and lifestyle of particular periods. The collection of ceramics includes rare examples of 18th-century European porcelains and the most important collection of pre-industrial British pottery outside Britain, collected by Frank C. and Harriet P. Burnap.

The collection of European Painting and Sculpture includes a strong group of Italian paintings. One of the museum’s greatest treasures is Caravaggio’s Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness. The stars of the Northern European paintings are works by Petrus Christus, Wtewael, and a portrait by Rembrandt. The French paintings include a major Poussin, as well as a fine collection of Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. The latter includes Monet’s Boulevard des Capucines and Water Lilies, van Gogh’s Olive Orchard, and works by Cézanne, Gauguin and Manet.

In addition, the European Art galleries are currently undergoing a an $11.7 million renovation of that will showcase the internationally celebrated Marion and Henry Bloch Collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art, which will go on permanent view in Spring 2017. The art will be integrated with the museum’s European collection, a project that is the result of a thoughtful planning process and strategic initiative.

 

Requirements

Ideal Experience

Candidates should possess the following type of knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:

  • Strong museum background with ten (10) or more years as a Curator to include deep scholarly knowledge of field with experience in generating lively, artistically significant programs, originating innovative exhibitions, and enhancing the permanent collection through thoughtful interpretation and acquisitions.
  • Master’s degree in Art History; PhD in Ancient, Decorative or European Art.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing successfully as a published author on art historical topics in catalogues, journals and other scholarly works.
  • Previous experience supervising a staff of Assistant/Associate Curators and administrative personnel including the ability to manage, mentor and develop high performers and build succession.
  • Strategic vision and creativity, coupled with a self-motivated and results-oriented work ethic.
  • Extensive participation in scholarly and public forums, collaborative projects with education, interpretation and through community outreach.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing, from a Senior Curatorial perspective, multiple temporary and permanent exhibitions, with cross-institutional teams and shared authority. A background in or knowledge of and training in conservation issues as related to art.
  • Experience forecasting and managing labor and program budgets for a department and exhibitions.
  • Must have excellent credentials and be a recognized leader in his or her field of study as well as have the ability to formulate and implement a vision for the department.
  • Proven experience working closely with donors and collectors.An ability to interact well with Trustees in order to assure long-term support for the museum.

General Description:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art seeks a creative leader and youth advocate to direct the vision

and strategy for dynamic teen experiences at The Met. S/he directs, plans, implements, teaches,

and evaluates programs that engage young people and create relevant connections between the

lives and interests of youth and the Museum’s vast collections. With a focus on out of school

learning experiences for young people ages 11-18 in the Museum, s/he supports the interests and

needs of middle and high school aged youth, fosters both independent and social learning among

them, develops youth leaders, and shapes comprehensive programming that advances teens’

agency, creativity, and skills. S/he establishes the strategic directions, pedagogy, and formats for

programs, engagement, and resources for young people. S/he leads teen-centered initiatives

including museum-wide, collaborative teen nights, the Teen Blog, and workshops, co-developing

and executing some with other Education program areas and with other Museum departments.

The Assistant/Associate Educator establishes and maintains relationships within the Met and

with the broader arts, education, and youth development community. S/he builds audiences for

teen programs, supporting New York City area community and Department of Education

educational priorities for these audiences. S/he actively contributes new research and practice based

knowledge to the museum education field, serving as a thought leader for teen

programming and as a resource for students and peers. The Assistant/Associate Educator has

excellent organizational skills and is able to manage multiple, logistically complex activities

simultaneously within a museum setting while guiding the pedagogical priorities of programs for

young people. S/he supervises the Teen Programs team and reports to the Senior Educator for

Family, Teen, and Multigenerational Learning.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Advocate for the arts and art museums in youth development, and for the role of youth voice

and engagement within the Museum, establishing and sustaining relationships with peers and

strategic partners inside and outside the walls of the institution.

  • Develop and implement the strategy and pedagogy for high quality, high impact teen

programs at the Met.

  • Identify key audiences for programs and develop and implement engagement strategies to

maximize visibility and reach in order to make the Met more accessible to a broader, more

diverse audience; and collaborate with external groups to expand out of school programming

and opportunities for middle and high school students.

  • Plan and execute each program season, meeting deadlines, calibrating program volume to

visitor needs and Museum resources, and drawing on both Museum and city resources to

ensure that programs are innovative, relevant to new and current audiences, and aligned with

mission and goals. Collaborate and communicate with staff across Education and the

Museum, including curators, conservators, Membership, Library, External Affairs, and

Visitor Services staff to plan and implement programs.

  • Develop and monitor budgets, oversee and track statistics, and mine data to identify

participation patterns and inform resource allocation and workflow. Prepare development and

other reports.

  • Manage Teen Programs staff. Supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Supervise teaching of all teen programs. Recruit, train, schedule, and manage a solid group of

high-performing contractual educators and teaching artists. Regularly observe and formally

evaluate teaching by contractual educators and interns in teen programs as well as other

program areas. Contract and guide guest presenters/performers, as needed.

  • Identify evaluation and research priorities for programs; design and carry out formal studies

with evaluators; analyze and report on results, applying these to strategic program decisions.

  • Regularly teach teen programs as well as programs for a variety of audiences, including

school groups.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise interns and teen volunteers who support teen programs to ensure

a high quality visitor experience. Mentor, empower, and supervise young people in their

leadership roles as High School Interns and foster their continued engagement with The Met.

  • With digital media, curatorial, conservation, education colleagues, and with the Senior

Educator, help develop and at times initiate the creation of interpretive resources for young

people, including high-impact online resources and materials for self-guided visits to the

Museum. Write interpretive materials for these audiences.

  • Oversee program logistics, working closely with the staff who manage the Uris Center for

Education, Visitor Services, Security, and operational staff across the Museum to ensure dayto-

day program coordination, efficiency, and communication.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 5years experience working in museums
  • Minimum 5 experience leading programs involving young people.
  • Demonstrable excellence teaching with original works of art in a gallery setting for a variety

of audiences, including young people.

people and museum audiences.

  • Demonstrable understanding of the potential of and tools for digital learning, as well as

The MFAH Department of Learning and Interpretation engages intergenerational audiences and students with the Museum’s collections and exhibitions of world art. The Audience Engagement area joins the forces of creative programming, entrepreneurship, and audience research to find and engage new audiences, and to create productive community partnerships. The Participatory Programs Specialist creates and plans public programs in which visitors take on active roles. This specialist works with the Audience Engagement Manager on a broad program of audience research, and in response, experiments with participatory program design to reach new audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualizes, plans, and implements a range of programs for audiences wanting an immersive, participatory experience.
  • Works with the Audience Engagement Manager to assist with plans for a broad-based program to measure audiences’ engagement with public programs at the MFAH.
  • Continues to implement the following programs, developing a new evaluative tool for audience participants:
    • Art, Body, and Mind, a Wellness program in partnership with MD Anderson, in connection with relevant art on view.
    • MFAH Book Club, a program that links works of literature to works of art in the museum’s collection and special exhibitions.
