Executive Director of SCAD Museum of Art and Savannah Exhibitions [Savannah College of Art and Design, GA]

SCAD seeks an executive director to develop the strategic vision and implement the long-term plan for SCAD Museum of Art and Savannah exhibitions.

In this role, you will be responsible for excellence in every aspect of operations at the SCAD Museum of Art, one of the country’s premier contemporary art museums. Overseeing the selection and presentation of exhibitions, you will ensure a well-rounded schedule of events that includes educational programs, artist lectures and local outreach programs. Additionally, you will communicate with the other SCAD locations to ensure the continuity of exhibitions.

The executive director is responsible for the proper care and storage of permanent collections, as well as working with curators and directors on exhibition catalogs and conducting VIP gallery tours for special guests.

In addition to overseeing daily operations and maintenance of the permanent collection, you will supervise the museum’s fundraising, grant writing and financial administration, including coordination with the university’s institutional advancement department and cultivation of relationships with major stakeholders for the purpose of fundraising special projects. You will also participate in the creation and management of the museum and exhibition budgets, sign purchase requisitions and prepare quarterly and annual reports on all facets of the museum.

The executive director is the liaison between the museum and other SCAD departments, as well as between the museum and the community. You will travel as needed to promote the museum, maintain partnerships with the arts and business communities and provide input about marketing and public relations to elevate the reputation of the museum and the university.

The ideal candidate has previous experience creating and applying strategic plans for large organizations and demonstrates a deep understanding of curatorial work, including exhibition research, development and installation. You should possess strong leadership skills, a familiarity with standard practices for museums and nonprofits and the ability to work well with departments within an institution. Excellent writing and public speaking skills are essential, as is experience with fundraising, grant writing and audience development.

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery seeks a charismatic and creative Major Gifts Officer to join its hard-working, fast-paced advancement team in building the base of individual supporters for the Museum. The incumbent will focus on restricted support for exhibitions, collections, educational and outreach programs, and endowment. This position is located in the Office of Advancement at the National Portrait Gallery and reports to the Director of Major Gifts.

The Museum has significantly grown its advancement department in the last two years and, as a result, has seen dramatic increases in fundraising performance. Our challenge is to maintain this rate of growth for the duration of the museum’s $25 million comprehensive campaign, which concludes in 2018, the Portrait Gallery’s 50th anniversary year.

The Major Gifts Officer will:

  • Discover and qualify new prospects
  • Build and manage a national portfolio of 75-100 prospects rated at $25,000 and above
  • Develop and implement strategies to solicit 5-7 figure gifts
  • Close 10-15 major gifts per year toward an annual, individual dollar goal
  • Staff Museum executives and volunteer leadership, including preparing briefings, talking points, and follow-up letters
  • Design and execute appropriate events for the cultivation and stewardship of major donors
  • Maintain a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the Smithsonian’s infrastructure, policies, and procedures

Requirements

Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of front-line fundraising experience, preferably within a large cultural institution or arts-related nonprofit. Must have a proven track record of fundraising success, including successfully identifying cold prospects and bringing them through the cultivation cycle to close six-figure gifts and above. In addition to possessing superior relationship management skills and the initiative and ability to work independently, the successful candidate must have the gravitas and leadership presence to interact with high level donors and arts patrons, as well as curatorial, administrative, and board leadership.

The Major Gifts Officer will be assigned to prospects in Washington, DC and in 2-3 other key regions across the country. Extensive travel is required as well as evening and weekend work to execute and assist with a variety of special events, tours, and meetings. A passion for history, art, and biography is a plus.

Special Collections Librarian [Revs Institute for Automotive Research Inc., Naples, FL]

The Revs Institute for Automotive Research Inc., a 501(c) (3) not for profit educational organization, is seeking a Special Collections Librarian to manage its extensive automotive history collections. The Revs Institute®, located in Naples, Florida, has assembled a private research library comprised of over one million original research documents; with over 25, 000 book titles, one million images, and in excess of 350,000 periodicals and related ephemera. This material, along with numerous collections of corporate and private papers, trophies, sales literature, film, memorabilia, and other related media are organized together within the library’s 2 floors totaling over 12,000 sq. ft.

The Revs Institute’s expansive holdings begin at the dawn of the motorcar in the late 19th century and retain continuity up to present day with most English and major foreign language books and publications. Motor racing images and motoring images of all types exist from a majority of the 20th century in various formats. A major photo digitization project was initiated in 2012, with the consulting and development assistance of Stanford University Libraries (SUL). To date, more than 460,000 images have been digitized and retained in a comprehensive website developed by SUL for access and use worldwide in education and historical research. The website contains images from our permanent collection and was processed by our library team in Naples, with the digitization outsourced.  Revs also offers archival prints and image files for sale to enthusiasts and for commercial use, with proceeds used to support our mission. The Revs Institute also houses the Collier Collection of important automobiles built between 1896 and 1995. The collection contains automobiles of historical significance that are representative of those which helped formulate the world as we know it today. Position: Special Collections Librarian

Job Description: Position Summary:

The Revs Institute for Automotive Research, Inc. seeks an experienced and team oriented Special Collections Librarian to coordinate the administration and operation of the Institute’s special collections. The Special Collections Librarian will ensure that the collections are maintained according to current library standards and archival practices. The position requires services to visiting scholars, students, researchers, and historians, as well as responding to inquiries from outside sources via electronic media, and maintains a supervisory role of six supporting library staff, volunteers and student interns.  Activities to include, but not limited to, research services, reference and instructional activities publications, preservation of materials, archival processing, cataloguing and metadata processing. Additionally, s/he assists with the development of short and long range plans of the special collections, to include future digitization efforts. The Special Collections Librarian reports to and works closely with the Vice President of The Revs Institute who oversees the operations of the library and related auto museum collection.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising the recruitment, training and performance management of library staff; contributing to the development of policies and procedures; representing the library and archive to visiting historians, researchers, faculty, staff and the auto history community.
  • Coordinating outreach and engagement initiatives for the special collections, to include, but not limited to, providing reference, research and instructional assistance.
  • Coordinating the production of select print and electronic publications directly related to special collections, and the Institute’s overall mission.
  • Planning, managing and implementing library policy, including creating and monitoring budget.
  • Select /Recommend new collection materials for the library
  • Assist in analyzing possible acquisitions of automotive collections

Education / Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:

  • An MLS /MLIS from an ALA accredited institution, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant experience in special collections or archives in a research library.
  • Experience being responsible for the recruitment, training and performance management of staff.
  • Experience attending to budget matters related to department operations and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing effective research assistance to visitors and in electronic requests.
  • Evidence of the ability to participate in professional organizations, and to be engaged in research and scholarship as required.
  • Experience in handling of rare books, and of proper archival practices.
  • Exceptional research skills utilizing all facets of digital, print and related media.

The Richard M. Ross Museum at Ohio Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Museum Director.

The Director’s responsibilities include:

  • organization, installation and supervision of all Ross Museum exhibitions during the    academic year, plus additional exhibitions in two smaller venues: Gallery 2001 (in    the university library) and the Mowry Alumni Center;

Ohio Wesleyan University is an undergraduate liberal arts institution located in Delaware, Ohio, about 20 miles north of Columbus. The Richard M. Ross Museum, located in an extensively retrofitted post office, opened in 2002 and has become one of the premier exhibition spaces in central Ohio. The mission of the Ross Art Museum is to mount exhibitions that support and enhance the curriculum of the Fine Arts Department and the liberal arts teaching mission of the University. The Permanent Collection’s primary strength is in modern works on paper, including prints, drawings and photographs; additional holdings include the Terry LaNoue Collection of African Art. Exhibitions in the Ross Museum include the annual Senior Show by studio art (BFA/BA) majors in the Fine Arts Department and a biennial exhibition by the Fine Arts Department faculty. Additional exhibitions include individual and group shows by guest artists and thematic presentations of work from the Permanent Collection. Exhibitions organized by internal and external guest curators and shows of local historical material have also been presented. Gallery 2001 features predominantly regional artists; Mowry Center exhibitions spotlight alumni/ae artists.

In addition to the director, the Ross Museum staff includes a museum administrator, a museum assistant, a registrar/intern, and a technician. The Ross Museum offers 2,986  square feet of exhibition space arranged in four galleries, plus offices and preparatory and storage spaces.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications:

  • M.A. degree or equivalent in art history, museum studies, curatorial studies or related field;
  • 1-3 years experience as director of similar museum or as assistant director of a larger    facility;
  • familiarity with professional museum standards and procedures as they pertain to exhibitions, collection care, registration and security;
  • teaching experience in Gallery Management, Museum Studies or comparable course.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 3-5 years experience as director of a similar museum;
  • Ph.D. in art history, M.F.A. in studio or related field, with expertise in modern and/or contemporary art;
  • curatorial expertise with works on paper;
  • ability to work well with others;

The Andy Warhol Museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, and a collaborative project between the Carnegie Institute, the Dia Art Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. We are currently seeking a Curator of Education and Interpretation to join our team.

The Curator of Education and Interpretation will be the primary advocate for the museum’s audience-centered enrichment philosophy, which is based on visual literacy and active looking. The Curator of Education & Interpretation leads efforts to create, implement, and evaluate a wide range of innovative educational programs, activities, and interpretive strategies that connect diverse visitors (onsite, offsite, and via the Web) with the museum’s collections and exhibitions. S/he supervises a high-performing team of museum educators; has an integral role in planning for exhibitions, permanent collection, Web-based, and other visitor-related projects; initiates collaborative efforts to further the museum’s educational mission; and contributes to a host of planning and audience development activities within the museum and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Effectively manages education budgets and actively seeks ways to increase earned and contributed income.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The position requires an advanced degree and substantive academic training in art history and arts education; additional course work in museum studies and/or management is desirable. The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in a supervisory role in museum education with a track record of innovation and leadership and a demonstrated ability to generate earned and contributed income. A record of research and publishing in art, art history, and/or museum education is a plus. Three years of experience in arts education advocacy on institutional, community and national levels and demonstrated experience in grant writing and fundraising.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The curator must have a broad knowledge of art history, including the ability to understand and explicate a range of topics relating to the museum’s collections and exhibitions. Awareness of effective strategies for engaging diverse museum visitors of all ages is required, including an understanding of human development, learning theories, school curriculum, and program design and evaluation. In-depth appreciation and understanding of Andy Warhol, popular culture and contemporary social, artistic and cultural issues is desirable. The ability to lead and inspire a diverse team of artist-educators is essential. Excellent written and oral presentation skills are required, along with proficiency with budgeting. The successful candidate must be able to thrive in a complex, fast-paced, and multitasking environment. Some evening and weekend hours required.
