Education Assistant [Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum]

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is currently considering applicants for the position of Education Assistant.  The Education Assistant reports to the Vice President of Education and Public Programs and the Director of Education and is responsible for performing a variety of administrative duties to assist in the efficient operation of the Education Department and for providing administrative support to the Vice President of Education and Public Programs as needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1.        Assists Vice President of Education and Public Programs in coordinating logistical aspects for all educational programs.

  • Schedules meetings, travel, conferences/programs as necessary
  • Prepares documents for presentation including reports, letters, and program information.
  • Sends out mailings and related correspondence
  • Assists with logistical aspects of program production, technical requirements, payments, scheduling and space reservations
  • Assists in developing and editing PowerPoint presentations

2.       Assists in the day-to-day operations of the Education Department under the supervision of the Director of Education.

  • Coordinates aspects of the Museum’s digital learning initiative including asset management, imports videos, uploads materials to the website, maintaining function of website, edits videos and photos for website use.
  • Coordinates aspects of the Museum’s on-site education program (Rockin’ the Schools) including processing evaluations, assisting with daily set-up, maintain and proof materials, update Patron’s Edge database, and maintain the teaching schedule and evaluation system.
  • Monitors Rockin’ the Schools reports and EDU email inbox
  • Maintains accessible filing system
  • Assists in developing and editing PowerPoint presentations

3.       Provides support for Education Department events:

  • Assists in the production of certain events
  • Films events
  • Annotates video content

Coordinates artist/speaker travel itineraries for Museum and Library & Archives programs

  • Updates general website content as advised    

Duties include but may not be limited to the above.

Job Requirements

  • High school graduate and one (1) to two (2) years professional administrative experience required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Digital media knowledge and experience preferred – audio/video recording and editing.
  • Knowledge of rock and roll history and related popular music genres is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of music reference sources and research tools is strongly preferred.
  • Ability as a performing musician is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to deal effectively with artists, educators and employees.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all assignments.
  • Ability to read and demonstrate basic oral, written, mathematical and manual skills and ability to communicate in Standard English.
  • Problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum reference check, background investigation and drug screen.
  • Computer Literate: Microsoft Office Suite (specifically PowerPoint and Excel) required; experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, iMovie or Final Cut Pro preferred; Patron’s Edge
  • Ability to get along with other people.

The DePaul Art Museum, seeks a visual arts professional to orchestrate development of content-rich and largely modern and contemporary exhibitions, provide educational experiences, manage museum operations, strengthen the organization’s Advisory Board, and proactively drive fundraising outreach. The Director is expected to incorporate diverse curatorial voices and sensibilities into the museum’s programming, follow best practices for the university art museum, and attract donors of art and financial support. The Director will also ensure that the museum functions as a bridge between DePaul University and the art world, and continues to define DePaul Art Museum’s brand position within Chicago’s prestigious arts community.

DePaul University was founded in 1898 and was the first Catholic university to offer admission regardless of religious background, and to women on an equal standing with men. The DePaul Art Museum was established in 1985, and in 2011 a new 15,200 square feet museum was opened and strongly embraced by the community. The Museum annually presents 6-10 exhibitions and associated programs, has a modest permanent collection encompassing 2,800 objects, and features pieces that include important works by Chicago and regional artists, North American photographers, WPA era prints, contemporary and traditional West African art, and Eastern European graphic arts. The next Director is expected to be ambitious, entrepreneurial and bring the excitement of visual art works, artists and thought-leaders to the university and its Chicago constituents.

Reporting to the Director, the Curator of Exhibitions is responsible for, but is not limited to, overseeing and curating exhibitions. This position has administrative responsibility for all aspects of museum exhibitions, including budgetary, scholarly, and editorial matters, and will collaborate with art historians and studio arts professionals. The Fralin Museum of Art is located on the University of Virginia’s historic grounds, designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Its collection features approximately 13,000 objects. The Fralin opened its doors in 1935 and in its early years, received several important works of art, including 17th century French and Flemish tapestries, two Rodin sculptures, and Frederic Church’s Natural Bridge, Virginia. The Fralin exhibits American and European painting, works on paper, and sculpture of the 15th-20th centuries; art from the ancient MediterraneanAsian art; Native American art. Job Requirements

Qualifications (Education and Experience):

MA in Art History or art-related field, PhD preferred; qualified candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of curatorial experience focused on exhibition management and extensive knowledge of art. Must have experience in long-range and strategic planning as it pertains to exhibitions.

Candidates must also have a high level of administrative experience, excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a leadership position within a collaborative environment, and must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Mint Museum Director of Learning & Engagement is an exceptional leader who furthers the mission of The Mint Museum by initiating and managing the museum’s innovative learning opportunities. Reporting to the President and CEO, the position oversees the areas of interpretation, educational programming, outreach, community relations, Library, and Archives. S/he initiates and supervises broad initiatives supporting excellence and equity, including but not limited to those that deepen relationships with the Latino community and better attract and serve creative teens. S/he is a key member of the Mint’s Senior Leadership team that sets priorities, establishes policies, develops budgets, and sets long-range strategic goals for the museum.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the Mint’s interpretive, programming, and outreach efforts to provide innovative participatory learning opportunities for diverse audiences of all ages
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor the Learning and Engagement team, including professional development, for staff who oversee programs for adult, teen, family, college and K-12 (student and teacher) audiences, and under-served communities, who oversee docent tours and training for both museum locations, who conduct art instruction, who manage the Lewis Family Gallery, who manage the STAR (Student Art) Galleries at both locations, and who manage the Mint Library and Archives.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments especially Collections & Exhibitions and Advancement and Communication to coordinate programming in a fast-paced exhibition schedule in two locations and to mesh with Advancement initiatives.
  • Lead L&E staff in the museum’s current initiatives to deepen relationships with the Latino community and to better attract and serve creative teens.
  • Guide the museum as a member of the Senior Leadership team
  • Serve as a key public face of the Mint, representing the museum with excellence, and promoting the value and worth of museum education and outreach
  • Build enduring community partnerships and initiatives to support and promote access and equity
  • Supervise, support, and grow the Mint Library and Archives
  • Serve as liaison to the Learning & Engagement Committee, engaging them in advocating for, championing, and supporting the museum’s educational mission
  • Play leadership role in fundraising, including individual, foundation, government, and corporate support for the museum
  • With others, author funding proposals to support audience development, museum education, outreach, and library services
  • Promote and further the Mint’s strategic plan
  • Oversee departmental budget and budget planning
  • Serve as liaison to the Friends of the Mint, and advise the Docent and internship programs

 

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

EDUCATION:  Master’s degree in art history, art education, arts administration, museum education, fine art, museum studies, or related discipline

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:  Ten or more years of museum leadership experience, including developing and planning programs, supervising staff and volunteers, and initiating and managing many community projects. Strong team player with experience working collaboratively on interpretive projects, evaluation studies, and major renovations. Respected leader in the art museum education field with an active record of professional leadership roles, presentations, and publications.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Demonstrate a passion for excellence and equity. Strong leadership and vision, management and mentoring skills. Ability to conceptualize, create and implement innovative projects and partnerships. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Extensive knowledge of art history, current museum teaching strategies and learning theory, and extensive public speaking experience.  Strong sense of teamwork and community.Demonstrates an understanding of the role of museum education in lifelong learning, 21st century skill-building and visual literacy. Demonstrates an understanding of the value and the role of a museum library and archives in the museum and the greater community. Demonstrates an understanding of the growing role of technology in museum education, outreach and interpretation, and its limitations

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Office Environment. Must have flexibility to work weekends and evenings on occasion.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises a staff of eight, including two departmental managers.
