Volunteer Tour Guide and Docent [Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA]

Description:
We are recruiting new volunteers to help us meet the growing demand for our history tours, technology demonstrations, and school programs. Volunteers welcome visitors in the museum, lead tours of the historical highlights of Mass General’s campus and of the historic Ether Dome, and demonstrate our virtual dissection table.

Docents typically have one standing two- or three-hour shift per week; must have some flexibility to cover other shifts. Most of the shifts are during M-F 9-5 business hours, with some Saturday shifts. Must be available a minimum of six months.

Qualifications:
You can expect to work with all ages, with tourists and hospital staff and patients, with locals and visitors with limited English. No special background in history, medicine, or science is required – we will train you!

Canterbury Shaker Village is seeking volunteers to join our cadre of craft demonstrators! These artisans bring the Village to life during the summer by practicing their trades within the historic buildings where the Shakers once lived and worked. Existing trades practiced in the Village include oval box making, letterpress printing, broom making, sewing, spinning, weaving, rug braiding, rug hooking, and poplarware weaving . . . and we’re always looking to expand the scope of our trades to include other industries practiced by the Shakers. Canterbury Shaker Village is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, mid-May through October each year. Prospective volunteers should be able to commit to at least 2 days per month during the season; scheduling and hours can be adjusted to suit individual availability. Benefits include membership eligibility (based on volunteer hours), museum discounts, and invitations to volunteer appreciation events. The United First Parish Church, Quincy “Church of the Presidents” History and Visitor Program is seeking volunteer guides for the 2016 season beginning April 19. Volunteer guides provide half-hour tours of the Church Sanctuary and the crypt, containing the tombs of President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams, and President John Quincy Adams and First Lady Louisa Catherine Adams. This volunteering opportunity is perfect for individuals who enjoy working with the public and who have an interest and passion for history and architecture. Prior experience as a guide or interpreter at a historic site/museum is helpful but certainly not a requirement. A working knowledge of Massachusetts colonial history, the Adams Presidents and First Ladies or Quincy is also very helpful, but again not a requirement for the position. Applicants must be able to climb stairs and be on their feet for extended periods of time Length of Commitment Volunteers are the lifeblood of this historical program. We ask volunteers to commit for the length of our season, which runs from April 19 – Nov. 11 The program hrs. are M-F 11 am – 4 pm, Sat/Sun Noon-4 pm. The minimum commitment is working one full shift, one week or weekend day per week. Training, orientation, and historical resources will be provided. Upon learning the material, a trainee may shadow as many tours as they wish until they are comfortable conducting tours independently.
