Description:
Museum Educators are volunteer tour guides who engage visitors of all ages in interactive discussions, and support the mission of the Education Department.

  • Commitment: Complete a one-time, intensive Initial Training program of approximately six weekly 1.5-hour sessions covering basic program skills and content, leading toward qualification. Attend twice monthly team meetings to learn new programs, explore content, practice activities and share ideas. Fuller Craft Museum Educators deliver program experiences mostly on weekdays, with occasional exceptions. Demand is heaviest in the winter through late spring, through programs take place throughout the year, including the summer months.
  • In return for their time and service, Museum Educators (MEs) receive a complimentary Family Membership to Fuller Craft Museum.
  • In addition, MEs will also receive the following exclusive benefits: Preview tours of new exhibition, in-depth information about exhibition, special hands-on studio workshop opportunities, training in providing inquiry-based tours and other professional development
Qualifications:

  • Appreciate art and the creative process.

  • Enjoy undertaking and applying research.
  • Are available 4-5 hours per month for tours.
  • Can attend team meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Guides for Gallery Experiences

Description:
Peabody Essex Museum Guides for Gallery Hangouts are volunteer docents who host drop-in programs throughout the museum, with a special focus on family groups made up of multiple generations. Gallery hangouts are “pop-up” programs offered for up to two hours at a time, located in a variety of spots to encourage surprise, fun, and discovery throughout the museum. PEM Guides invite audiences to connect with art and ideas using touchable objects, sketching and art experiences, games and challenges, hands-on discovery, and friendly conversation, helping to deepen and enhance the museum experience. Participants explore topics ranging from artistic processes and materials to cultural and historical context, creativity, and imagination. The Gallery Hangouts Team is one of four PEM Guide teams. Responsibilities include: · Completing an Initial Training program, concluding with a qualification process certifying the Guide to lead programs with the public · Learn, practice and deliver a variety of Gallery Hangout experiences developed by PEM’s Education Department, including Gallery Spots, Art Investigations, and other drop-in formats. · Attend monthly Team Meetings, participating in sharing, peer support and conversation about effective practice and contributing creative ideas to the ongoing development of Gallery Hangouts · Participate in continuous improvement, self-assessment, and program evaluation processes led by PEM staff · Use recordkeeping systems to track audience participation numbers · Conduct preparatory research outside training hours to develop knowledge and keep up to date on new content · Support PEM’s educational and interpretive goals and values, using interpersonal communication approaches established by Education staff
Qualifications:
The Guides for Gallery Experiences enjoy meeting and talking with people of all ages and backgrounds; are active listeners with excellent conversational skills, able to get participants talking, sharing and interacting together; show enthusiasm for sharing art, culture, and ideas with people of all ages and backgrounds; show respect for all individuals; have a friendly manner and find it easy to initiate exchanges; have strong observational skills and an ability to “read” people’s responses; are flexible, able to tailor experiences “on the fly” to match participants’ interests and priorities; enjoy helping audiences explore a select range of subjects in many different ways, such as storytelling, object handling, art-making, and game playing; work with staff and peers to continuously improve gallery teaching skills, using coaching, reflection, and self-assessment ; are reliable in fulfilling their commitment to the museum and its mission. Commitment: · A one-time Initial Training program consisting of six (+/-) 3-hour sessions covering basic program skills and content, leading toward qualification. Initial training is offered on both a weekday and a weekend day. · Attend 3-hour monthly Team Meetings to learn new programs, explore content, practice activities and share ideas. Team Meetings are offered on both a weekday and a weekend day. · Attend quarterly 3-hour meetings with PEM Guides from all four teams. Receive updates on museum activities, hear new exhibition introductions, and access other useful information. These Informational gatherings are offered in both weekday and weekend sessions. · Service – Gallery Experience programs are offered on Saturdays and Sundays, with some exceptions featuring weekday programs during school vacations and holidays. Active PEM Guides for Gallery Experiences are expected to contribute 5 hours per month, usually in two shifts of 2.5 hours each.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE 242nd BOSTON TEA PARTY REENACTMENT

Description:
Presented by Boston’s famed Old South Meeting House and The Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, the 242nd Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party Reenactment is an opportunity for the public to join in on one America’s most symbolic acts of public protest.

The annual reenactment brings together actors, re-enactors, speakers, professional theatre companies, businesses, politicians, news stations, and most importantly, the citizens of Boston to celebrate this important event. As a volunteer of the 242nd reenactment of the Boston Tea Party, you will be taking one of several important roles, including the directing of crowd flow, securing of parade routes, and facilitating of the reenactment along the Harborwalk near Atlantic Wharf.

Volunteer [Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, MA]

Description:
Volunteers strive to establish a welcoming atmosphere and provide each visitor with a memorable, personalized experience. Volunteers are trained by Education Department staff to greet and welcome visitors, answer a variety of questions ranging from wayfinding, to Museum history and programs, and engage visitors in conversation in the galleries. Once trained in these areas, volunteers have the opportunity to pursue additional training for ushering at concerts and lectures, leading introductory talks, and leading spotlight talks.

Qualifications:
We are looking for personable, outgoing people with excellent communication skills and an ability and desire to work with diverse audiences. An art background is not necessary, as we will provide training. We ask volunteers to commit a minimum of two years to the Gardner Museum, with a minimum of three, three-hour shifts per month.

Whether you are a college student or a retiree, if you are enthusiastic about sharing the Gardner Museum with visitors from all over the world, please consider becoming a volunteer today!

Volunteer shifts are 11 am-2 pm and 2-5 pm, Wednesday through Monday, with additional shifts from 5-9 pm on Thursdays. A minimum of three shifts per month is required, as is a two-year commitment to the program

Medford Historical Commissioner [Medford Historical Commission, Medford, MA]

The Medford Historical Commission is seeking qualified individuals from the Medford community to serve on its board.

The Medford Historical Commission, along with the Medford Historic District Commission, is entrusted with the preservation and protection of the City’s historic character and heritage.

The Commission was established under Section 8d of Chapter 40 of the Massachusetts General Laws and Chapter 48 of the Medford Municipal Ordinances. The Commission is the official City body charged with the identification of properties and sites of historical significance and is the principal advisor to the City on matters relating to historic preservation. The Commission reviews all requests for the demolition of buildings constructed before 1900 or listed on the National and Massachusetts Registers of Historic Places, in accordance with the City’s demolition delay ordinance. The board holds regular monthly meetings and occasional special hearings at City Hall, conducts site visits as necessary, oversees historic property surveys and grants, and engages with Medford property owners on issues of preservation.

Applicants should have interest, knowledge, and experience in fields related to architectural history, historic preservation, and/or Medford history. Applicants should contact the Commission by submitting a letter of interest outlining their qualifications. Please include name and contact information, as well as relevant supporting material. Candidates may be contacted for an interview. The Commission shall then present nominees to the Mayor for final selection and appointment. Those selected to serve on the board volunteer for three-year terms as Special Employees of the City.
