Registrar [Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, AZ]

We are looking for a dynamic and forward thinking Registrar to join our team at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), a division of Scottsdale Arts, a leading nonprofit arts organization in the Southwest. Our Registrar is an integral part of our institutional strategy, planning processes and success.

Duties include:

  • Responsible for the oversight of the museum’s collection and acquisition process.
  • Oversees the conservation activities for the collection.
  • Recommends, develops and implements collection policies and related procedures.
  • Maintains and supervises vaults, location records and off site storage.
  • Maintains appropriate database of collection and updates as needed.
  • Works closely with the director, curatorial and installation staff on exhibitions including planning, outreach, negotiation of insurance, all aspects of shipping and transit, receipt of items and installation/ desinstallation and dispersal.
  • Ensures compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to loans and collection activities.
  • Upholds standards of registrar activities as defined by the American Association of Museums.
  • Lead a long-term process to get SMoCA’s collection and its information on-line for the general public.

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree (Master preferred) in Art History Museum Studies or related field, along with minimum 5 years’ experience in similar position. The ability to work flexible hours is required.

Curatorial Assistant [The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY]

The Hyde Collection seeks a curatorial assistant to support the Museum’s curator in all aspects of a busy curatorial department, such as administering a historic house collection, conducting research, and mounting an ambitious exhibition program. Among the assistant’s principal duties will be maintaining collection records, responding to inquiries from the general public, and liaising with artists and other museum professionals. The candidate should have a sound knowledge of museum procedures, some art historical training and research skills, and previous museum experience. Knowledge of a European language, professional art handling skills, and programs such as InDesign and Photoshop would be a distinct advantage. Collections Management Internship [Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA]

The Harvard Art Museums’ Department of Collections Management is accepting applications for an Intern to assist with research and records projects in the Registrar’s Office. This internship will provide an introduction to the practical aspect of managing fine art collections in a major museum and the intern will gain experience tracking museum objects through research into original collection files and the electronic collection database The Museums System (TMS).

This internship is unpaid and applicants must be receiving academic credit to be considered.

Description:
– Work closely with the Director of Collections Management and museums’ Registrars to reconcile inventory in museum storage.
– Research objects from the museums’ collection in digital and physical files to complete museum records.
– Other projects include assisting the Registrar’s department with the management, archiving, rehousing and digitization of collections management records as well as data entry and clean-up.

Qualifications:
– The unpaid internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students receiving academic credit from a degree granting institution.
– Candidates must be organized, detail oriented, and able to work independently.
– Students who are majoring in museum studies, art history, or library science and have a strong interest in research are encouraged to apply.

Term:
– This internship will take place over the spring 2017 semester (beginning in late January/early February). Hours are flexible, but a minimum of 10 hours a week is highly desired.

Location:
– Please note that the location for this internship is at the Somerville Research Facility, an off-site building in Somerville, MA. Hourly shuttle service is provided to and from the off-site location to the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge and the MBTA Orange Line and buses 86, 91 and CT2 run nearby. There is a parking lot (free) at the Somerville location if you choose to drive there.
