Family Programs Facilitator [The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY]

Whitney Family Programs Facilitator

The Whitney is partnering with select New York City graduate schools to invite current students in art and art education or museum education to facilitate weekend studio programs for families at the Museum.

Family Programs Facilitators will work with Whitney staff to learn about inquiry-based teaching strategies and art-making techniques. They will explore techniques in different media and learn how to connect works of art on view at the Museum with studio projects.

Facilitators will be paid $25 an hour to lead drop-in, hands-on Open Studio workshops for families with children of all ages. They will also assist with large scale family events. There will also be additional opportunities to work with other audiences.

Responsibilities include:
– Leading hands-on art projects for families with kids of all ages designed by the Coordinator of Family Programs in the Museum’s Hearst Artspace.
– Setting up and cleaning up before and after programs. – Tracking attendance and collecting emails for our mailing list during programs.
– Working with and communicating effectively with volunteers.
– Attending monthly training meetings and working closely with Museum staff to learn how to teach projects.
– Completing necessary independent research and reading of materials given by Education staff.
– Providing written reflections after programs.
– Working collaboratively and communicating effectively with Family Programs Staff.
– Working at large-scale events for families of all ages.
– Helping at other Museum-wide events such as Membership, Teen, Public, and Community and Access programs.

Requirements:
The candidate should be enrolled in a Master’s degree program and interested in learning more about the field of Museum Education; have an interest in working with modern and contemporary art, as well as an ability to connect with kids and adults of all ages; a desire to learn about facilitating art making workshops; flexible and able to work independently as well as part of a group; available to work weekend hours.

Part-Time Museum Interpreter [Paul Revere House, Boston, MA]

The Paul Revere House seeks enthusiastic history-lovers who enjoy talking with all kinds of people as part-time Museum Interpreters. As the museum prepares to open a new Visitor and Education Center this fall, this is an exciting time to join our staff! Looking for great communicators who are comfortable with crowds, with the flexibility to learn multiple work stations, a background in American history or other museum related field, and a passion for informal education. Money-handling and customer service experience desired. Interpreters work one to two regular days per week. Weekend availability is a plus. Occasional additional substitute days are possible. $10.00/hr. 8-hour day April 15-October 31, 7-hour day November 1-April 14. Project Collections Specialist – Costume and Textile Collections [Nantucket Historical Association, Nantucket, MA]

The Nantucket Historical Association seeks a Project Collections Specialist to oversee a major project to assess, inventory, and rehouse the NHA’s exemplary collection of historic costumes and textiles. The position will report to the Robyn and John Davis Chief Curator. The position also works closely with other members of the NHA team. The position is a limited-term for 12 months, 40 hours per week, and includes holidays, vacation time and benefits. Housing is available. Responsibilities include inventory costume and textile collections, manage decant of costume and textile collections from existing shelving to new compact shelving, rehouse artifacts, update and improve catalog records in the collections database, identify and report on conservation needs, research found-in-collections items to determine their origins, and suggest potential objects for deaccessioning. Experience with handling historic costume and textile artifacts, as well as a graduate degree in Conservation, Museum Studies or a related field are preferred. Interim Director of Facilities [Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT]

Full-time, temporary/contract position Term: 6 – 10 months (approximate) The Wadsworth Atheneum is seeking an Interim Director of Facilities, whose primary responsibilities are supervising the activities of maintaining and repairing the mechanical areas of the museum environment; guarantees a high level of security for collections, visitors, and properties; and ensures the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the museum. This position requires on-call flexibility off-hours and weekends for emergencies. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Monitor and maintain (through contacts) the museum’s physical plant including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; provide facility maintenance and repair solutions on both an as-needed and regularly scheduled basis by conducting regular inspections of buildings and grounds; making recommendations for improvements and repairs. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in experience and training; 8 – 10 years of experience, preferably in an institutional setting or cultural environment; combination of experience and/or formal training in supervising HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Basic understanding of all trade skills and mechanical engineering; Knowledge and understanding of current building codes; proven problem-solving skills, ability to deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form; proven leadership skills; ability to use various Microsoft Office products effectively. Head of Conservation [National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, New York, NY]

The Head of Conservation Services is responsible for the physical integrity, overall care, and treatment of the diverse material culture holdings of the 9/11 Museum’s collection. This senior position provides both strategic guidance and practical expertise about the collection’s long-term preservation. Annually, he/she will prepare and oversee the budget pertinent to the Museum’s anticipated conservation activities and facilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: · Advocates for the conservation needs of the collection, and represents those needs and issues within the organization and to Museum field. · Develops and implements long-term strategies for the sustainability of the Museum’s holdings in compliance with the Museum’s Collections Management policy and best practices. · As the expert voice, the HCS plays an active role in defining conditions, durations, and mounts for collection display. · Determines the appropriate handling, stabilization and treatment options for collections objects in all media, recommending and supervising work by outside conservators. · Authors executive reports and informational memoranda pertaining to collection items. · Monitors protocols for the care of collections and recommends changes.
