Virtual Classroom Visit: Kris Manjapra, Empire and Enlightenment

These videos are part of an ongoing project by Phil Gay and David Hammer called Student Centered Teaching at Tufts. Videographers visit classes around campus to record faculty members in the process of teaching in their classrooms, and to hear each faculty member’s reflections afterward, as they observe themselves interacting with students.

This video captures a small seminar History 80 classroom taught by Professor Kris K. Manjapra and focuses on Empire and Enlightenment and The High Tide of Liberalism. The episode features students discussing writings of German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, French political thinker, Alexis de Tocqueville, and British philosopher, John Stewart Mill. The class explores the intersection of society and politics and the universality of reason. The video was captured in the Fall of 2013.
