TEACHING

First day of class in session at the Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex on the Medford/Somerville campus, January 2016 (Alonso Nichols/Tufts University)

It’s a deeply philosophical question to ask: what is teaching? One facet of the answer is: teaching is an interaction between an instructor and learners which involves a continuous exchange back and forth, through which the instructor provides activities, tools, and information to help the students construct their own understanding. Teaching, viewed this way, involves the creation of many contexts which facilitate student learning. Meeting students where they are as learners, and helping them get where they need to go, is integral to teaching, and can happen in contexts as small as an office-hours meeting, or as big as a huge lecture hall.
