Environmental Stewardship Assistant Vice Chancellor, UC Davis

ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR – ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP is an essential leadership position necessary for creating and delivering the UC Davis of the 21st Century. The incumbent has primary responsibility and is accountable for three campus programs: (1) sustainability including waste reduction and recycling; (2) environmental planning, review and management, and (3) natural resource management and planning. While housed in Campus Planning, Delivery and Facilities, successful development, management, and implementation of these programs require: participation and integration across most administrative divisions (e.g., Student Affairs, Administration, and Research); involvement of students, faculty, and staff; and fostering relationships between administrative and academic programs. The incumbent functions independently to identify potential issues, develop possible solutions, propose campus policies, recommend actions to achieve program goals, implement approved actions, and manage related litigation. All three program areas are highly visible with off-campus constituencies. The Assistant Vice Chancellor represents the campus to the press, in public forums, and on committees organized by local government agencies including the City of Davis and the County of Yolo on these topics. The incumbent also coordinates litigation related to these topics for the campus. Incumbent is responsible for administering an annual operating budget of approximately $850,000. In addition the AVC is responsible for oversight of the budgets for campus environmental planning and review which varies but can exceed $1.0 million in some years.

COP21: Resources for Following Along

Between November 30th and December 11th, 2015, world leaders and representatives from over 190 countries will gather in Paris for the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). A key goal of the conference is to reach a universal climate agreement to keep global temperature rise below 2°C in an effort to avoid the most dire impacts of a changing climate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that if no action is taken and we continue on our present course, the earth is on track to see a global average temperature rise of at least 4°C (more than 7°F) by the end of the century.

President of the French Republic, François Hollande, explained that despite the attacks that occurred on November 13th, the conference will go on as planned: “We must continue – continue working, going out, living our lives, influencing the world: this is why the international climate conference will not only go ahead, but will bring hope and solidarity.”

This video from Grist provides a basic overview of the upcoming negotiations in under 5 minutes.

Global Warming Intern, Environment America (various locations)

Environment Massachusetts
Global Warming Campus Internship

Make a difference on global warming and clean energy this fall.
Work from campus, 4-7 hours/week.

Global warming is happening and we’re seeing the effects all around us — from dangerous heat waves and droughts to last winter’s snowstorms. And scientists warn it could get much worse unless we act soon.

The good news: we have the solutions. Solar power is taking off, and we’re beginning to harvest energy from the winds off our shores.

But powerful interests, including utility companies and the fossil fuel industry, are threatening to stop clean energy in its tracks.

We’re looking for smart, hard-working students to build the people power it will take to repower Massachusetts with clean energy. Interns will work 4-7 hours per week from campus.
