Don’t miss the upcoming Tufts Hazard Mitigation Community Forums on 9/27 and 9/28:

Over the past few weeks, several institutions of higher education have been impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Come contribute to Tufts’ own plan to prepare for future disasters and adapt to the impacts of #climatechange. Learn about hazard mitigation strategies that have been identified to make each Tufts campus more resilient to disaster and provide input on how the university can best ensure its resilience in the years and decades to come.

What is hazard mitigation?
Hazard mitigation is defined as any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to life and property from hazard events. It is an on-going process that occurs before, during, and after disasters and serves to break the cycle of damage and repair in hazardous areas.

Meet the New Eco-Reps!

Our new Eco-Reps are here! We now officially have Eco-Reps for every dorm on campus and for the first time we have a SMFA Eco-Rep! So far the Eco-Reps have helped freshman move-in sustainably, composted over 200 gallons of food waste, volunteered at the Community Harvest Project in Grafton, and helped out at the Blue and Brown Pass Down Sale. It has been quite a busy few weeks!

For the rest of the semester, the Eco-Reps will serve as resources for residents in the dorms to help create sustainable living habits.  Be sure to ask them any and all of your sustainability questions! Not sure what mixed recycling is? Ask an Eco-Rep! Don’t know where your dorm’s compost is? Ask an Eco-Rep! Have questions about how to reduce your waste while living on campus? Ask an Eco-Rep!

Not only can Eco-Reps answer all of your sustainability questions, but they also host sustainability-themed events throughout the semester. Some exciting events planned for this semester include tye dying, herb planting, compost decorating, and pumpkin carving! To stay up to date on all of the Eco-Rep events throughout the semester follow the facebook page! You can also find the Eco-Reps in Dewick on Mondays for Meatless Mondays! There you can pledge to reduce your meat consumption, even if it’s just for one meal a week (every little bit helps)!

Environmental Organizing Fellowship, Green Corps (USA)

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

The planet needs all the help it can get, especially now with so many environmental protections under attack. To win now and build a strong foundation for lasting progress, we need people who know how to organize: to run organizations and campaigns that will inspire the support and action we need to save our planet. Our year-long program gives you intensive classroom training with people like Bill McKibben, Jane Kleeb, and Phil Radford. Then, you move to hands-on experience working with groups like Corporate Accountability International, The Wilderness Society and Mighty Earth to fight climate change, protect public lands, and reform our food system. When you graduate, we help you join our nearly 400 alumni in a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups. We’re accepting the top 20-30 candidates out of more than 1,000 applicants for our 2018-2019 program. If you’re passionate about the environment and ready to learn the craft of organizing, apply today!

Political Campaign Fellows Intern Program, ELM Action Fund (Massachusetts)

Internship Description

The ELM Action Fund is looking for interns to be part of our 2017 Campaign Fellows program who will help elect environmental champions and to build the power of the environmental community in Massachusetts. The Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) Action Fund is a 501c4 organization that works to elect new environmental champions to the state legislature, defend our incumbent legislative champions, hold legislators accountable, and build the political power of the environmental movement in Massachusetts. We are the state affiliate of the League of Conservation Voters.

Main Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in helping to elect environmental champions to state and local office
  • Mobilize environmental activists to participate in our campaign activities and advocacy work
  • Assist with the ELM Action Fund’s endorsement process for state and local candidates
  • Support ELM Action Fund’s advocacy and legislative work

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong social media and online engagement skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail
  • Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts a plus
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends
  • Commitment to environmental advocacy

Preferred but not requited

  • Experience working on, volunteering for or running a political campaign
  • Experience with VAN/Votebuilder

Duration: September 25th through December 7th

Stipend: Interns who complete the program will be eligible for a small stipend. Reimbursement will also be provided for travel expenses.

Social Media Intern, Safe Roads Alliance (Medford, MA)

Internship Description:

Safe Roads Alliance is looking for an intern to do social media for our small non-profit in road safety. The position would require a minimum of 30 minutes per day (M-F), posting relevant articles, research, and news stories about Distracted Driving, set up via Google Alerts. Since they have a national and international reach, they try to stay active on social media. Currently they have almost 13K followers on Twitter and want to be more engaged on Facebook. The internship will run from September/October to May, with the opportunity to continue into the future. Compensation: currently this would be an unpaid position.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Studying or interested in Communications, Transportation, Public Safety, or Public Health.
