Identifying water quality risks in the Missouri River Bioregional watershed, Center for Health, Environment and Justice (Tufts University and Remote)

The Yankton Sioux tribe in South Dakota are developing a long-range project to define and understand water quality on their reservation, in partnership with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. The tribe wants to develop a co-management plan for the Missouri River Bioregional (MRB) watershed that will restore traditional Native practices of water and land management. To realize this goal, an inventory is needed of the plants, wildlife, water, aquatic life, and cultural and ceremonial sites. An important part of this effort is to define the water quality in the Missouri River Bioregion with an initial focus on the approximately 150 mile stretch of the Missouri River between Lower Brule Reservation and the city of Yankton.

We are looking for help with each of these steps – processing and cleaning existing water quality data and pollution sources including non-point pollution sources in the targeted region on both reservation and non-reservation land. This project can be part of a thesis or internship, please discuss with your advisor. Overall goal is to create an interactive map of the region across different databases at different sites. Skills in ArcMap/arcpy and R/RStudio desired but not required. Meetings are both remote and at Tufts University.

Director for the Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives, Williams College (Williamstown, MA)

Williams College invites applications for the position of Director for the Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives. Reporting to the Provost, the Director serves as a visionary leader and communicator of the College’s sustainability efforts. The Director helps Williams set ambitious sustainability goals and partners with other College leaders to pursue the most effective strategies for monitoring and meeting them. 

The Director will be responsible for raising campus engagement, serving as a knowledgeable resource for College operations, tracking and communicating the institution’s environmental performance, and identifying and planning opportunities to improve sustainability. The Director will also build effective partnerships and relationships with members of the wider community who are engaged in sustainability efforts, including building on the strong existing network Williams already has with the sustainability offices of other colleges and universities.

Learning Garden Summer Intern, Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary (Lincoln, MA)

Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary is both a working, sustainable farm, wildlife sanctuary, and a busy center for multiple environmental education programs located in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The Learning Garden Intern will assist with the Learning Garden, providing both gardening and educational assistance under the guidance of the Food and Farm Educator. The intern will assist with planting, weeding, and harvesting; small group instruction; and planning and leading activities for our summer campers. The intern may also choose to lead a long-term project as it relates to the Learning Garden with guidance from the Food and Farm Educator.
