Recycling Intern, Tufts Office of Sustainability (Remote – Medford, MA)

Are you passionate about reducing the amount of waste that goes to the landfill? Do you enjoy educating your peers about recycling? Are you good at organizing? Then join the Office of Sustainability’s recycling team! This position will support Tufts’ recycling efforts and initiatives.  Below are sample selected responsibilities:   

  • Education and Outreach: Will develop and deliver presentations and other educational material about recycling to different groups within the University and will collaborate with the Recycling Coordinator on starting new education and outreach initiatives.   
  • Data: Will aid the Recycling Coordinator in processing the University’s recycling, trash, and compost data for all four campuses, including specialty recycling items. This includes receiving incoming data, transferring data to our Excel files, and creating data visualizations and/or reports in excel.  
  • Specialty Recycling: Will help out with maintaining the University’s specialty recycling streams, including small electronics, textiles, ink and toner, batteries, lab waste, and plastic film, through monitoring, tracking, processing, and drop-off.  
  • Waste Infrastructure: Will provide Tufts community members and buildings with recycling bins, labels, and signs when requested and/or needed.  

 The Intern will hone efficient customer-relations skills, data collection skills, logistics knowledge, education and outreach skills, and recycling industry knowledge.

Lead Communications Intern, Tufts Office of Sustainability (Remote – Medford, MA)

The Tufts Office of Sustainability is seeking a graduate student to assist with communications during the 2020-2021 academic year. The Lead Communications Intern would be responsible for maintaining high standards for our office’s outgoing communications and managing all planning and coordination activities for the Office of Sustainability’s social media communications, publications and newsletters. They would oversee, and work in coordination with, several undergraduate interns creating outreach materials and posters, writing blog posts, social media programming, and performing website and blog maintenance. 

This position is for the 2020-2021 academic year, with possibility for extension over the summer and following year. The start date will be the week of September 13th, or beginning as soon as possible. The Office of Sustainability’s main operations will remain remote for the Fall 2020 semester, meaning the Lead Communications Intern will work remotely to manage their team of interns.

A minimum availability of 13 hours per week is required, with the opportunity to work up to 18 hours per week. Preference will be given to qualified individuals who are available to work 15/16+ hours per week. Hours will be completed during regular business hours, 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Sustainability Research Intern, Tufts Office of Sustainability (Remote – Medford, MA)

The Tufts Office of Sustainability is seeking a student to do research and write memos on various sustainability topics. This will be almost 100% computer work, involving researching a specific topic and writing a concise memo that includes a summary section with recommendations. A guide on the memo style will be provided.

Sustainability memos are designed to inform decision-making, determine best practice around given topics, and/or do benchmarking research. Example memo topics include: How nine colleges achieved carbon neutrality, how to implement sustainability into the academic curriculum, other institutions’ sustainable procurement policies, or a comparison of local composting companies comparing prices/pros/cons.   

Occasionally, the intern may be called on to support office programs such as the carbon neutrality planning process, employee Eco-Ambassadors, the Green Office Certification program, and support other sustainability initiatives at the university.
