Campus Leaders Program, Citizens’ Climate Lobby (Remote)

The purpose of the Campus Leaders Program is to empower students to become effective climate advocates and organizers in their communities. With support from CCL staff and regional fellows, Campus Leaders learn climate advocacy skills, educate others about climate solutions, and build political will for carbon pricing.

Students in the program join one of two tracks: The regular track for students who are new to CCL and the accelerated track for those who have experience with CCL. Students in the regular track spend a semester learning about CCL, advocacy methods, and organizing. Students who do the regular track can apply for one credit from their school for completing the program. They are automatically enrolled in the accelerated track following successful completion of the program.

#COP26 Tufts Representative, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) annual Conference of the Parties (COP)

Passionate about climate change, environmental justice, or international relations? Want to discover how you can take part in global climate negotiations and learn about the latest in environmental politics?

Apply to represent Tufts University at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) annual Conference of the Parties (COP). Through their status as observers, the Tufts delegates gain important insight into the discussions that frame global climate change policy and action.

ALL members of the Tufts community, including undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff and alumni, are eligible to apply to attend COP.

Global Sustainability Summer School, Santa Fe Institute and The University of Chicago (Santa Fe, NM)

The SFI/Mansueto Institute Global Sustainability Summer School (GSSS) offers an intensive 2-week program on urban sustainability. The school is organized around a set of cutting-edge, interdisciplinary lectures and discussions that focus on many interdependent aspects of cities. It offers an in-depth overview and hands-on experience to prepare participants to work and conduct research in areas related to urban sustainability. The program runs from July 27 to August 7, 2020.

Identifying water quality risks in the Missouri River Bioregional watershed, Center for Health, Environment and Justice (Tufts University and Remote)

The Yankton Sioux tribe in South Dakota are developing a long-range project to define and understand water quality on their reservation, in partnership with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. The tribe wants to develop a co-management plan for the Missouri River Bioregional (MRB) watershed that will restore traditional Native practices of water and land management. To realize this goal, an inventory is needed of the plants, wildlife, water, aquatic life, and cultural and ceremonial sites. An important part of this effort is to define the water quality in the Missouri River Bioregion with an initial focus on the approximately 150 mile stretch of the Missouri River between Lower Brule Reservation and the city of Yankton.

We are looking for help with each of these steps – processing and cleaning existing water quality data and pollution sources including non-point pollution sources in the targeted region on both reservation and non-reservation land. This project can be part of a thesis or internship, please discuss with your advisor. Overall goal is to create an interactive map of the region across different databases at different sites. Skills in ArcMap/arcpy and R/RStudio desired but not required. Meetings are both remote and at Tufts University.
