The team leader works as a member of the Leadership Team with responsibility for the operation of programs and services that present preservation information to the public, provide perpetual easement protection of privately-owned historic properties, assist homeowners through Historic Homeowner membership, and respond to preservation advocacy issues in accordance with the Preservation Intervention Strategy.

Responsibilities: Implements strategic externally-focused preservation programs, proposes annual plans and budget, and supervises staff in program implementation. Serves as staff liaison to a trustee-level easement committee. Directs the development and ongoing regional operation of the preservation easement program, currently holding easements on 94 privately-owned historic properties throughout New England.  Directs planning and implementation of homeowner services programs and provides general historic preservation information for members and the public.  Serves as the public face of externally-focused preservation programs including administering the Preservation Intervention Strategy advocacy program, primarily focused on Historic New England properties and easement properties.  Monitors state, regional and national trends and issues in the historic preservation field. Writes articles, presents public programs. Serves as a member of the senior management Leadership Team, participating in institutional planning and addressing cross-organizational issues and projects.

The position requires frequent travel throughout New England. A valid driver’s license and means of transportation are required. Weekend and evening work periodically required.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, or related field.

Minimum of six years job-related experience, including supervisory experience. Requires fully competent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Requires knowledge of the issues of preservation philosophy and practice as they relate to the care of buildings and landscapes. Requires specialized knowledge of the philosophy, legal requirements and practices of easements, both land and buildings, and experience in the development, negotiation, administration and enforcement of easements.

Requires understanding, experience and enthusiasm for engaging the public in preservation activities through membership, creative program development and promotion, and cooperation with partners internally and externally to reach, engage and serve a wide audience. Requires general knowledge of state and federal grant funding opportunities and processes, along with regulatory and statutory requirements related to both public and private funding. Other Preferred Qualification: J. D. degree with specialization in preservation law.
