Position Description: The education department is looking for a dynamic educator with a deep knowledge of contemporary art, a passion for working with New York City teens, and experience organizing artist-driven programs and events. The coordinator will run the existing Youth Insights programs and create a new series of drop-in programs for teens. This is an exciting time to join the Whitney as the Museum prepares to open its new building in the Meatpacking District. The coordinator will work to build relationships with downtown community organizations and high schools that are in and around the Meatpacking District.
Responsibilities: Design and manage all aspects of the Whitney’s after-school programs for high school students, including Youth Insights Artists and Leaders, Summer Arts Careers, and the YI Introductions Program for ELL students. Design and manage large-scale public programs and smaller-scale, drop-in artist workshops for NYC teens. Conduct targeted outreach to ELL and LGBTQ youth, with a special focus on underserved or at-risk students. Inquiry-based teaching in the galleries. Collaborate with Whitney artists to create and teach curriculum for programs. Train and supervise junior staff and interns Coordinate and track evaluation projects. Manage budgets for current and future teen programming. Oversee and manage the Museum’s teen web pages and social media related to teen programming. Write grants and grant reports. Meet and communicate with foundations and donors. Contribute to the museum community through publications and conference presentations
Qualifications: Requirements: BA (master’s degree preferred) Background in art history, fine art, American studies and/or museum education Three to five years professional experience with fluency in a second language a plus Ability to work in a fast paced environment, multi-task and work with the rest of the education team Strong organizational and communication skills Position requires travel throughout NYC and extended hours for program implementation during the week and on weekends. Applicants should be excellent teachers with strong knowledge of contemporary art and artists’ practices; experience working with high school students and teachers; solid knowledge of current educational theory and developmental theory; and experience with program research and evaluation.
