Job Description

The Department of Digital Experience at the Art Institute of Chicago is looking for an innovative and experienced producer to collaborate with the education department on digital initiatives. The Art Institute of Chicago is an encyclopedic art museum with more than 260,000 works in the collection. The education department, guided by the principles of Learn, Engage, Enjoy, is a key facilitator between the public and the museum’s exhibitions and collections. The Digital Learning Producer is critical in engaging and supporting the visitor experience within the museum’s digital layer.

Duties include:

  • Produce and manage digital media programs with an emphasis on education and interpretation, such as ipad applications, audio stops, microsites, videos, social media, touchscreen interactives,  and distance learning initiatives. Special focus on online learning platforms.
  • Develop strategy and partners for online and distance learning. Leverage new and pre-existing content for online learning platforms.
  • Write media treatments, production plans, and create schedules for digital learning projects.  Manage relevant teams and own the project management system.
  • Strategize with education for digital media programs to support upcoming exhibits, permanent installations, and lectures.
  • Support the concept phase of the media production process with creative workshops and brainstorm sessions for education-related teams. Employ a proven creative process, such as design thinking, to conceptualize new ideas and move the team towards identifiable goals and milestones.
  • Directly collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in education and curatorial on digital learning initiatives. Represent the interests of museum education in relevant museum-wide media projects.
  • Work to improve the digital learning experience on existing platforms, such as LaunchPad (an ipad application) and Closer (a mobile application).
  • Manage and introduce new media and software for education staff. Mobile device training for education on an as-needed basis. Support and advise any education staff using digital media or technology for their programs.
  • Manage education-related grants. Involves budgeting, scheduling, team coordination, and adherence to grant guidelines and deadlines.
  • Manage the relationship with external partners and stakeholders for digital learning projects.
  • Manage software, hardware, and initiatives for student classrooms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  •   Bachelor’s degree in art history, education, communications, or digital humanities.  A master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2-5 years experience producing multimedia, preferably with a cultural focus. Excellent project management, production planning, and leadership skills required. Experience with online learning platforms preferred.
  • Production management experience with both linear and non-linear media. Video production experience, including: treatment-writing, editorial supervision, and freelancer coordination. Interactive production experience, including: content development, software production management and knowledge of the design-development process.
  • Deep knowledge of technology and media applications for educational purposes. Must be keyed into emerging technologies and ready to share new ideas with the education staff.
  • Experience with a variety of content management systems. Experience with usability testing and quality assurance. Comfort with testing and evaluating new media with a diversity of audiences.
  • General understanding of adobe design applications preferred. Fluency with rapid prototyping and workshopping tools, such as paper prototyping, storyboarding, and wireframing tools. Basic videography and photography skills a plus.
  • General appreciation and knowledge of game-based learning, flipped learning, design thinking, haptic design, physical computing, and maker spaces.
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of media file formats and best practices for archival and web publishing purposes.
