Mellon Performing Arts Apprenticeship
The Mellon Apprenticeship is a two-year, grant-funded position in performing arts administration. You will receive hands-on training in the day-to-day tasks of managing a busy performing arts season (65 events/year plus 2 festivals), with a particular focus on “confluence” residencies or residencies at the crossroads of visual and performing arts. Past residency artists include, Lucinda Child and Frank Gehry, Hear Lies Love, Laurie Anderson and more.
In Year 1, you will assist in the planning and implementation of all scheduled performing arts activities and become familiar with our audience and mission, working both in company management, audience services, volunteer coordination and general office tasks. You will work with our curatorial team based in New York City and have the opportunity to develop a proposal for a performing arts residency that crosses between performing and visual arts, which will be included in the MASS MoCA season in Year 2.
Year 2: In addition to continuing work with company management and audience services, you will work closely with the Managing Director on all aspects of producing a “confluence” residency. This will involve working with both our curator in New York as well as our visual arts curatorial team at MASS MoCA. You will review residency proposals and ultimately choose an artist who works across performing and visual arts for a residency that best fits MASS MoCA’s mission. You will be the liaison with the artists and the MASS MoCA staff and work to coordinate all aspects of this residency. You will develop a budget and marketing plan specific to your residency. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will work directly with the Managing Director. This apprenticeship requires a 2 year commitment and includes a generous stipend plus housing.
Must have a BA or equivalent experience in contemporary performing arts.
