The Walters Art Museum is looking for a creative, highly talented Content Editor/Writer to join a dynamic, growing Marketing & Communications Department. As part of a new strategic plan we are re-envisioning the Walters and making big changes to how we engage our audiences. We need someone with fresh ideas, expert writing skills, and the ability to create compelling editorial content for various audiences in a range of formats and multiple platforms.

This new position will play a central role in the team-based work of the Marketing & Communications Department. Working collaboratively with the Director of Marketing & Communications and colleagues in the department, s/he will be a first-rate storyteller delivering the right content to the right audiences, as well as the primary writer/editor for print and digital communication materials, ranging from news releases to the institutional website to the members magazine.

The Content Editor/Writer is a member of the Museum Advancement Division, which consists of the Development, Marketing & Communications, and Visitors Services departments. The position will work closely with these colleagues to engage audiences, build support, and increase awareness of the Walters. The Content Editor/Writer will also collaborate with colleagues throughout the museum, with responsibilities crossing multiple museum departments and divisions.

Responsibilities for this position:

?       Be a roving reporter with a collaborative approach to finding, producing, and sharing stories of Walters moments with our visitors, members, volunteers, and staff

?       Serve as editor of thewalters.org and editor and primary writer of print magazine for members

?       Draft original content and adapt existing content from various sources to be engaging for a variety of audiences

?       Provide core copywriting and editing for marketing, development, membership, and institutional communications. Source and supervise freelance copywriters, copyeditors, and proofreaders as needed

?       Contribute to social posts using consistent, engaging, and approachable voice

?       Establish a museum/institutional editorial style guide for consistent user-friendly tone, style, and voice

?       Share knowledge and best practices and mentor colleague contributors, building skills to contribute to web and print

Requirements

Required Skills/Experience/Attributes:

?       Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Creative Writing, or related field

?       A minimum of 5 years of professional content creation and copywriting experience, on a full-time or freelance basis

?       Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with ability to write short, medium, and long-form content

?       Previous experience with content strategy and production across multiple platforms

?       Excellent listening and verbal communication skills

?       Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, with ability to be diplomatic and balance trade-offs among multiple interests

?       Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects at once, and respond to changing and new projects and priorities with grace and confidence

?       Eye for good graphic design

?       Expert editing and proofreading skills and knowledge of various style guides including AP and Chicago Manual of Style. Attention to accuracy and detail is critical

?       Positive attitude, flexibility in a dynamic work environment, and appreciation for a fast-moving agile organization

Bonus Points If You:

?       Can actively and enthusiastically represent the Walters at various events at the museum and in the community on evenings and weekends, as needed, live tweeting, etc.

?       Love of art and/or love the process of creating

?       Have a sense of humor and appreciation for a fast-moving, agile organization
