The Jewish Museum is the only art museum that focuses on the dynamic interplay between artistic practice—both contemporary and historical—and global Jewish culture from ancient times to present day. The Position

The Jewish Museum seeks a creative, articulate, organized, and passionate development professional to raise restricted gifts through the identification, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of foundations, corporations, and government agencies. This position is responsible for overall implementation of a comprehensive annual campaign to secure more than $3MM in annual grants and sponsorships in support of exhibitions, programming, and other special projects, including capital initiatives. In addition, the Director of Institutional Giving will provide stewardship for endowments and will work in tandem with other Development departments to meet institutional fundraising goals. In collaboration with the Director of Development and with colleagues across the Museum, the Director of Institutional Giving will devise new strategies to enhance philanthropic support.

The Director of Institutional Giving works closely with program staff, the Development team, executive staff, trustees, and donors. The position supervises the Institutional Giving Department, a team of four.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the Institutional Giving Program to secure support from foundations, corporations, and government agencies and officials, as well as assist the Director of Major Gifts with restricted gifts from individuals.
  • Identify and cultivate potential funders; develop and submit timely proposals; steward donors and oversee grant compliance; and renew restricted gifts for exhibitions and curatorial projects; public, family, and educational programs; corporate membership program; general operations; and special projects including capital and technological enhancements, marketing, and other opportunities as needed.
  • Establish department’s fundraising goals, monitor overall expense budget, ensure funder database records are up-to-date, and aid in preparation of analytical reports to measure progress toward fundraising goals for Museum leadership.
  • Design and implement creative, long-term strategies for achieving fundraising goals, expanding the donor base, and developing new funding sources, such as affinity groups and multi-year gifts opportunities for a wide range of institutional priorities.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train Institutional Giving Department staff of 4 full-time professionals to create and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for donors and prospects.
  • Provide stewardship of restricted endowments and develop proposals for program-related endowment gifts in collaboration with the Director of Major Gifts.
  • Manage and implement crediting and recognition policies and procedures for all institutional donations.
  • Represent the Museum and interact with all levels of the organization and donors.
  • Support the Museum Director, Director of Development, and Museum leadership with prospect strategy, briefings, and reports created in conjunction with the Senior Research Coordinator.
Requirements

Requirements

  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience in institutional fundraising in the non-profit field, preferably in the arts
  • Proven ability to personally cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills with the ability to edit others work and to write and speak in clear and compelling ways
  • Project management and budget development experience
  • A positive attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Willingness to work periodic weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or other development technology for prospect identification and research
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred
