ABOUT INTREPID: Founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an educational and cultural institution with a mission to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science, and service through its collections, exhibitions, and programming. A designated National Historic Landmark, the Museum welcomes over one million visitors annually and comprises Intrepid, the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the submarine Growler, and 27 authentically restored aircraft. The Museum also includes an 18,000-square-foot education center; Pier 86, part of the Hudson River Park Trust; and Exploreum Hall, an interactive exhibits center.
The Intrepid Museum is one of New York City’s most unique educational institutions, delivering high-quality education programming to many thousands of students, teachers, and lifelong learners for over 25 years. The Museum is also a leader in state-of-the-art accessibility programming, tailoring the visitor experience to people with special needs.
FUNDING: The Intrepid Museum has a FY 2017 operating budget of approximately $33 million.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The successful candidate is a dynamic and energetic advancement leader with passion, skills, and ambition to lead the advancement program for this one-of-a-kind institution. S/he will be the Museum’s fundraiser-in-chief, reaching out to a variety of audiences able to provide substantial financial support for the institution and its programs. The Vice President, Institutional Advancement reports to the President, works closely with the board and colleagues, and oversees a team of ten.
Requirements
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful advancement leadership experience in a not-for-profit institution; cultural arts background and/or education-related experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated skill in planning and implementing effective development plans that fund both operating budgets and capital projects.
- Success generating major gifts and developing individual donors.
- Well-versed in a broad spectrum of giving strategies and campaigns.
- Adept at developing new approaches to cultivate major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Board engagement, cultivation, and development experience.
- Appreciation for the unique challenges of an historical and educational institution that is also a tourist attraction.
- Dynamic team builder skilled at identifying, recruiting, mentoring, and managing a top-notch advancement staff.
- Able to integrate technology to plan, implement and sustain comprehensive advancement campaigns.
- Experience working with NYC government, business, and/or philanthropic leaders.
- Well-developed communication and presentation skills; comfortable serving as the face of a high-profile organization.
- Diplomatic and thoughtful—a consensus builder.
- Bachelor’s degree is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
