Begun in 1985 as an exhibition space in the Hudson Library in Highlands, The Bascom now occupies a six acre, six building campus.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible to and works with an active Board of Directors to oversee all facets of The Bascom including:Finances

    • Development (grants, membership, sponsorship, and capital campaigns)
    • Finances
    • Human Resources
    • Programs (exhibition, education, outreach, events)
    • Property (buildings and grounds)

The ED manages14 full time employees, 2 part time employees, and contract employees for education, development, exhibitions, marketing, and maintenance. The Bascom has enjoyed a reputation for presenting sophisticated exhibitions and offering art opportunities for all the community and is considered a community treasure.  A $2MM annual budget is funded by individual and corporate donations, memberships, event rentals, grants, and fundraising events.  Working with the Board, the ED is charged with continuing to increase regional and national awareness through exhibits and programs, bringing vision and leadership to the staff, increasing existing revenue streams, creating new revenue streams, and instituting successful marketing, PR, and fundraising programs to support and enhance the overall programming of The Bascom.

Job Requirements

The Bascom seeks a mission-driven executive with strong relationship building, management, and leadership skills. The ED will have a track record of progressive leadership experience and a passion for the visual arts.  The ED will be a goal-oriented, accomplished leader who is passionate and committed to the Bascom’s mission and values.  The ED serves as the primary spokesperson for The Bascom in interactions with donors, partners, and other institutions and community leaders.

Position Summary

The Director of Education will develop, implement and manage educational opportunities that enhance the level of understanding of the Seward family and museum’s collection to a full range of audiences.  The Director of Education will design innovative interpretive programs that reflect knowledge of current issues in museum education and the role of museums as an integral part of the educational infrastructure of the community.

The Director of Education and will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with staff, volunteers and the Museum Board of Trustees implementing our comprehensive education and interpretive plan. Specific goals include:  planning, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of educational and public programs, engaging new museum audiences, increasing the awareness of the Museum as an educational resource through presentations and promotion, and pursuing educational and programmatic grant opportunities.   The Director of Education will serve as the main contact for schools, educators, and manages the Seward House Museum’s volunteer and internship programs.

Job Responsibilities:

• Works with Museum Director to design, implement and evaluate education and event program schedule

• Develops curriculum plans for student and adult programs; creates an array of educational and interpretive offerings available to visitors

• Develops and implements specialized tours, programs and events for schoolchildren and the public

• Develops and implements web based outreach educational programming

• Oversees the logistical coordination of the museum’s school visits

• Manages the museum volunteer and internship programs, including the application and selection process, ongoing training and evaluation procedures

• Utilizes social media and other technologies to market and inform the public of educational programming and events at the museum

• Maintains working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of museum education and in the areas of student, family and adult learning and best practices in museum interpretation

• Researches and identifies potential grant opportunities and writes all major educational grants

• Works on audience advocacy to raise awareness of the Museum as a resource within the community by working with local cultural and community organizations to develop partnerships, collaborations, and special programs to serve their unique needs

• Serves on various committees, as required and assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, public history, education or related field required, Master’s degree preferred.  Minimum of two years experience with educational programming in museums, historic sites or nontraditional settings required.  Excellent oral, written and computer skills. Successful grant writing experience preferred.  Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of museum audiences. Ability to manage projects independently, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Knowledge and experience in visitor’s studies, program evaluation and museum education methodologies desired.

Assistant Curator [Art Institute of Chicago]

BASIC FUNCTION:   At the direction of the Department Chair, performs the full range of curatorial duties including research, publication, lecturing, giving tours, acquisition, recommending objects for acquisition or deaccession, organizing exhibitions and rotations, and participating in and contributing to the overall work of the Department. Has curatorial responsibility for all European and Western Hemisphere textiles in the Department’s permanent collection.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for keeping collection catalogue of Western textiles up to date. Conducts research on the permanent collection and contributes to the study of Western textiles through scholarly and online publication and public lectures. Maintains professional knowledge and contacts with colleagues by attending conferences and symposia, and by visiting other institutions to view collections and exhibitions.
  1. Conceives, organizes, and implements departmental rotations and loan exhibitions, which may on occasion include a publication. Conducts original research and uses this research to write labels, didactic materials, and other texts connected to rotations and exhibitions. Conceives of and participates in related programming, including lectures, tours, and lectures. Assists with rotation of textiles in other museum department galleries, as appropriate.
  1. Proposes potential acquisitions and deaccessions to Chair, and assists Chair in the research and presentation of acquisitions and deaccessions generally. Makes presentations on acquisitions and deaccessions, and other departmental matters, to the Committee on Textiles and to the Department’s affiliate group. Prepares justification essays for acquisitions and deaccessions.
  1. Works closely with donors, scholars, dealers, artists and museum administration, as appropriate. Takes an active role in departmental programs and events, and participates as needed in fundraising activities.
  1. In coordination with the Collection Manager and conservation staff, schedules and oversees appointments with visitors to view the Department’s collection, files, images, and resource materials, as practicable.
  1. Assists Curator in answering research inquiries from scholars, curators, dealers, collectors, and the general public.
  1. Supervises volunteers and special project staff as assigned.
  1. Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Must have at least an M.A. in Art History, with specialization in an aspect of Western textiles. European textile specialization preferred, accompanied by relevant foreign language skills. Two years experience as assistant curator or curatorial assistant in a museum or equivalent institution preferred. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential. Familiarity with MAC OS and software are required.

Conservator, Textiles [Art Institute of Chicago]

The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a Conservator of Textiles that will be responsible for the care and preservation of and technical research on all textile objects in the museum’s collections. Oversees handling of textiles by all staff members. Directs the operation of the textile conservation lab and oversees the management of the Department’s storerooms. Advises the Chair on all technical matters related to the museum’s textiles. The Conservator of Textiles will lead a team of four staff members.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for carrying out (or supervising) all treatment of textiles in the museum’s collection as necessary for on-going care, in-house exhibitions, and loans. In collaboration and coordination with Curators, prepares treatment proposals for works in the collection. In consultation with the Chair, establishes treatment priorities for the collections. Maintains all permanent conservation records, including written treatment proposals and condition reports for loans and potential acquisitions.

Oversees all conservation and preservation needs for special exhibitions involving textiles, including installation measures proposed by the Conservation Assistant. Participates in the planning and implementation of special exhibitions and special research projects. In this capacity, may travel with curators and conduct independent research toward such projects. May share responsibility for couriering fragile textiles and, when necessary, oversees installation of textiles at borrowing institutions.

Ensures that all the museum’s textiles, whether on view or in storage or on loan, are housed in safe environments with respect to light, temperature, and humidity levels.

Develops and maintains institutional standards for safe handling, storage, installation, installation, packing and shipping of textiles in coordination and consultation with conservators, technicians, installers, packers and registrars. Carries out research to determine the safe packing and shipping of fragile objects and may collaborate with the chief packer in designing special crates for this purpose. Advises curatorial, conservation and other colleagues on the proper care and handling of textiles.

Researches and supervises research in the conservation, restoration, and scientific examination of textiles.

Publishes and lectures on such research. Communicates with professional colleagues on a regular basis and participates in professional organizations concerned with textile conservation issues.

Responsible for administrative aspects of managing the textile conservation lab, including preparing and monitoring the budget for materials and equipment, maintaining lab equipment, supervising lab staff, training and mentoring conservation fellows and interns, and assisting with grant writing.

Assists the Chair on technical and practical matters on any project involving altering or adding to the physical spaces housing the Department offices, galleries, and storerooms.

Responsible for managing the overall functions of the Department in the absence of the Chair.

Curator of Collections [Art & History Museums- Maitland]

Curator of Collections

Full time position

The Curator of Collections directs and oversees the care, maintenance, housing, and access for A&H Museums collections and historic site. S/he manages informational data, forms, and legal documents related to gifts, loans, conservation, in-house, and traveling exhibitions, and insurance and shipping. The Curator Collections is responsible for the Museum’s IPM (integrated pest management) program, gallery maintenance and cleaning program, and climate monitoring. The Curator of Collections reports to the Chief Curator and works closely with the Curator of History and Director of Operations. S/he will supervise volunteers and interns in collections care. Must be available some evenings and weekends as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementing policies that relate to the care of the collection and historic site.
  • Oversee development and maintenance program for collections.
  • Oversee and implement routine Cleaning Program for collection storage areas and galleries, IPM (integrated pest management) program, and climate monitor/tracking.
  • Manage all collection records including object files, rights and reproductions, and cataloging of new acquisitions.
  • Oversee incoming and outgoing loans, maintaining all related records.
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic and hard copies of all object records; responsible for all digital and paper documentation related to the permanent collection and historic site in collaboration with the museum’s Chief Curator.
  • Catalogue new acquisitions in collaboration with the Museum’s Curators.
  • Maintain the Collection Management Database (PastPerfect) and data input management including digital images.
  • Manage correspondence and logistics associated with loans to the museum including loan agreements, loan records, insurance, shipments, and condition reports.
  • Participate in regular departmental staff meetings as well as other interdepartmental meetings as directed.
  • Supervise interns, and volunteers who are assigned to curatorial areas.

In addition to the above listed duties the Curator of Collections will:

  • Assist with installation of changing exhibitions in all museum areas as well as off-site locations.
  • Assist/coordinate installation of rotating exhibitions in onsite galleries including history facilities

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of accepted registration, collection management, art handling, and preventative conservation practices in line with AAM standards of care.
  • Working knowledge of PastPerfect museum database and other computer programs
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours when required
  • Skill with tools and knowledge of building materials
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 50lbs or more
  • Ability to work independently or with a team

Required Education and Experience:

  • B.A., M.A. or equivalent experience in art history, museum studies and/or fine art.
  • 2-3 years working in a collections/curatorial capacity in a museum setting.
