The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Advancement & External Affairs Associate. The position provides technical and administrative support and will assist with a full range of advancement functions including drafting documents and presentations, public outreach and programming, conducting donor research, managing and executing special events and educational programs; as well as performing data management and gift processing.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is a research institute of the Smithsonian Institution. It is joined with the Harvard College Observatory to form the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). The CfA is the world’s largest and most diverse center for the study of the Universe, comprising the astronomy and astrophysics programs of two renowned scientific institutions: the Smithsonian Institution and Harvard University.

Marketing Manager [Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, CA]

Description

The Marketing Manager will be responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies and initiatives with the goal of driving attendance and elevating the NHM and Tar Pits brands. The Marketing Manager should have an in-depth knowledge of the Los Angeles cultural, destination and entertainment market. This position requires developing strategic marketing plans which may include, but not limited to, promotions, advertising, digital initiatives, social media, email, direct mail and other collateral and offsite presentations and representations, as well as forming relationships with key partners to help maximize marketing efforts and budgets. In addition, the position also will be responsible for developing, overseeing and analyzing research to further understand the target market and their perceptions and attitudes about the Museums. The Marketing Manager will report to the Director of Marketing, while working closely with peers in Communications, Creative Services, Digital, Group Sales and Tourism Marketing and other departments.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategic marketing and promotional plans to achieve attendance goals and financial objectives
  • Working with director of marketing, design research efforts in order to measure effectiveness of marketing efforts and optimize them
  • Develop an annual promotional marketing plan to drive traffic during key time periods
  • Cultivate and engage promotional marketing partners
  • Engage in social media and lead digital media efforts with regards to Museums’ social media influencer campaigns
  • Develop partnerships within local chambers of commerce, civic organizations, businesses, associations, destinations, etc. to promote the visibility of the Museums, and increase visitation
  • Act as liaison between Museum and outside agencies, including, but not limited to advertising, media buying, research and digital

Requirements

The Marketing Manager must be highly organized, outgoing, collaborative, strategic, and independent. A self-starter who is able to multi-task within a busy work environment, must have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), proven success in marketing to specific target audiences, and strong relationship building skills.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a marketing role, preferably in an agency environment or in the entertainment, digital or destination markets
  • In-depth knowledge of the Los Angeles cultural and leisure market

Exhibits Technician [Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, CA]

Description
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is looking for a qualified Exhibits Technician to assist our Education and Exhibits department in the installation, deinstallation and maintenance of Museum exhibits. We seek a highly proactive individual who demonstrates professionalism, independent judgment, attention to detail, and teamwork.
This position has the following responsibilities, but are not limited to:
  • Participate in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of exhibits – under direction of Museum personnel when necessary.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies, including ordering of materials.
  • Maintain lighting, A/V, and mechanical components of exhibits.
  • Assist in construction of exhibit components and accessory materials.
  • Assist in the installation and deinstallation of exhibits by collaborating with crewmembers and other Museum staff.

Requirements

This position has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in art, science, or media field from an accredited college, or equivalent work experience.
  • Two years of experience in the preparation of Museum exhibitions.
  • Basic painting, carpentry, metalwork, and shop skills.
  • Computer proficiency, knowledge of computer programming preferred.
  • Proficiency with various types of audiovisual equipment; including video projectors, camera, lighting fixtures, gels, gobos, and audio equipment (mixers, amplifiers, microphones, etc.) preferred.

Head of Public Engagement [The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC]

Leads the museum’s public engagement initiatives. Provides vision, researches, develops, and implements robust and innovative public programs and visitor engagement initiatives in alignment with the Phillips’s mission and strategic initiatives. Collaborates widely with intra-museum teams and external museum partners to create dynamic, cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural programs and interpretive initiatives (onsite and online) that engage current and new audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Directs and innovates the museum’s visitor engagement strategies to create dynamic, participatory experiences with artworks in the galleries and digitally
  • Provides vision and strategy for museum’s robust public program portfolio
  • Leads public program partnerships locally, nationally and globally
  • Fosters relationships with cultural organizations, embassies and other museums to produce strong global/local partnerships and collaborative programs

Executive Director [Museum of Danish America, Elk Horn, IA]

Description

The Museum of Danish America is seeking to fill the position of executive director in 2016.  Knowledge of Danish or another Scandinavian language is highly desired.

Established in 1983, the Museum of Danish America (formerly known as The Danish Immigrant Museum) is located midway between Des Moines, IA and Omaha, NE on 35 acres of recreated prairie in the heart of the largest rural settlement of Danes in the United States. The museum’s mission is to celebrate Danish roots and American dreams and is the only national museum dedicated to collecting and interpreting the Danish-American experience. Guidance is provided by a twenty-five member Board of Directors from across the United States and Denmark. The museum has a collection of over 35,000 artifacts, an active traveling exhibit program, and a membership of over 3,000 from across the United States, Denmark and seven other countries.  It has a staff of ten full-time employees, six part-time employees and an active internship program hosting up to four Danish graduate students and an American graduate student annually.

SUMMARY

The executive director’s role has both strategic and operational components. The executive director has the day-to-day administrative responsibility for achieving the organizational mission of the Museum of Danish America, implementing the strategic plan, and assuring the efficient and effective operation of the organization.  To do this he/she works closely with the museum’s Board of Directors through the Board’s President and Executive Committee to develop policies, procedures, budgets and strategic plans that realize the museum’s mission and vision.  He/she also assures compliance with legal, financial, accounting and ethical requirements, including the standards and practices set forth by the American Alliance of Museums.

Vision, Mission, and Strategies

Working with the board and staff, the executive director must develop a shared vision for the future of the museum, build understanding around the current mission, and develop appropriate goals and strategies to advance that mission.

Accomplishment of Management Objectives

Working with the board, the executive director establishes operational objectives that support the strategic plan. The executive director is responsible for leading the staff in the implementation of the strategic plan and any annual plans.

Program Management

The Museum of Danish America carries out its mission by offering specific exhibits and programs. The executive director leads the staff in managing and administering these exhibits and programs.

Effectiveness in Fund Raising and Resource Development

The executive director, in partnership with the board and appropriate staff, is responsible for developing and implementing appropriate fund-raising and financial development strategies. The executive director and board use their combined strengths, knowledge, and relationships to help the museum achieve its objectives.

Fiscal Management

Ensuring that income is managed wisely is especially important for a museum. It is the role of the executive director to see that solid planning and budgeting systems are in place and that the museum’s goals and strategic plan serve as the basis for sound financial planning. In addition, it is the executive director’s responsibility to ensure that qualified staff are hired to accurately monitor, assess, and manage the financial health of the museum.

Operations Management

The executive director is responsible for day-to-day management. The executive director works with staff to develop, maintain, and use the systems and resources that facilitate the effective operation of the museum.

The Executive Director/Board Partnership

The executive director and the board must work together as partners. Each arm of leadership draws upon its own unique strengths and abilities. The executive director and the board have joint responsibility for developing and maintaining a strong working relationship and a system for sharing information.

External Liaison and Public Image

The executive director, staff and board members are key players in establishing and maintaining positive relationships with the many groups that support the work of the museum.

Other Duties

Performs other duties, included but not limited to duties as assigned, some of which may include the development and creation of a variety of copyrightable works included but not limited to print, photography, film, music, visual arts, etc. for distribution in any and all media and formats on a world-wide basis, all of which shall be for the benefit of the Museum.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Has the cultural knowledge and intellectual vision to lead the Museum of Danish America which

includes having knowledge of or affinity for learning about Danish and Danish American culture.

Danish language skill is highly desired.

Is a good communicator who can articulate the museum’s vision and non-profit niche to attract and retain public constituencies.  Communication competency is required in written and spoken communication and in the ability to make effective, credible presentations.

Works cooperatively and effectively in supervising and directing museum staff to create well-conceived programs that serve the museum’s membership and wider publics and develops supportive constituencies.

Increases the financial base by expanding private contributors, increasing institutional collaboration, and developing new approaches to potential constituencies.
