Featuring a world-class collection, including an original copy of the Declaration of Independence and handwritten letters by George Washington, the American Independence Museum in Exeter, NH is looking for volunteers to fill critical positions in 2016. “We offer comprehensive training and wonderful benefits—we welcome any and all to join us this year,” said Executive Director Julie Williams. Entering its 26th year of operation, available positions this year at the Museum include tour guides, educators, gift shop associates, and more. There is also a need for volunteers to assist with the American Independence Festival in July. Volunteer Docent [Nichols House Museum, Boston, MA]

Looking for something new to do in 2016? The Nichols House Museum is starting a volunteer docent program! We are looking for anyone over the age of 18 who is eager to learn and share their knowledge with the public. Docents will be trained to give engaging half-hour guided tours of the historic house to visitors who hail from around the world. The program includes 2 months of training (February-March) and requires a one season commitment of volunteer guiding. A season lasts from April-October, with additional special event volunteer opportunities available. An evaluation will be held at the 6 month mark. College students who are interested in the program can commit to two consecutive semesters of guiding. Training will last from 10:00 am-12:00 pm every Tuesday from February 2-March 15. Topics to be covered include: Progressive era history, Nichols Family history, identification of decorative art styles, and visitor engagement. Light additional reading will be required, as will the development of a personal tour script. The museum’s busy season lasts from April-October, when the museum is open 5 days a week. Tour guides are asked to work a minimum of 8 hours per month, in shifts of 2 hours. Tours are offered at the museum every hour from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, Tuesday-Saturday. Historical Interpreter – The Old Manse

Description:
The Trustees of Reservations is looking for knowledgeable dedicated people to interact with visitors at The Old Manse in Concord. Volunteers will lead dynamic house tours, help visitors pick out books and merchandise and explain the benefits of becoming a member of the Trustees.
You will have the opportunity to learn from our experienced staff at one of our most exciting historic properties. You will also have the freedom to develop innovative programs and even conduct research in an area of particular interest to you. This experience can be tailored to your passions.

Responsibilities:

  • Educate visitors and school groups through dynamic and individualized tours of the Old Manse house and attic.
  • Engage visitors and promote sales at the specialty bookstore
  • Process ticket sale transactions
  • Promote and process Trustees memberships

Time Commitment:

Flexible, time commitment to be negotiated

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and passion for American history, literature and/or philosophy
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Experience working with diverse audiences
  • Experience in education or interpretation and/or an undergraduate degree in American studies, English, history or literature, preferred but not required

Gallery Instructors [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA]

Gallery Instructors

Description:
Gallery Instructors (GIs) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, work with elementary and secondary school groups from Boston, New England, and beyond. Each school year, GIs conduct tours for approximately 25,000 children in grades K–12 in the many different collections and galleries of the MFA. Through interactive object-based discussions and hands-on learning activities in the galleries, GIs engage students in looking, thinking, and learning about art. We encourage applicants who reflect the diversity of Boston-area communities and the students we teach. We will begin recruiting a new class of GITs (Gallery Instructors in Training) in January 2016, and the interview and selection process will take place in the spring. Initial training will begin in September 2016, and new GIs will begin leading tours in early 2017.

 

Requirements:

  • Mandatory attendance at initial training sessions (held weekly on Friday mornings beginning September 2016)
  • Minimum two-year commitment as a Gallery Instructor, teaching one weekday morning per week during the school year (October to June) after satisfactory completion of the initial training program
  • Attendance at three GI Program Business Meetings per year (fall, winter, spring)
  • Attendance at collections training and professional development programs

We’re seeking a volunteer at the Museum to assist in maintaining our watch and clock exhibits and artifacts, and to research and write exhibit and artifact descriptions. – You will be working with other knowledgeable and experienced horologists.
Qualifications:
We’re looking for strong writing skills and at least a hobbyist’s interest in the history and technology of watches and clocks.
