Museum Archivist [Tomaquag Museum, Exeter, RI]

The Archivist is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the activities of the Library and Archives of the Tomaquag Museum. Archivist creates and implements the policies and procedures; Assists the Director with collection of original historical documents and reference material according to the collection policy; Assists in developing grant proposals and works with administration and appropriate staff to complete grant funded projects; Selects and appraises archival materials offered in conjunction with the collections policy; Supervises the activities of interns and volunteers; Provides training and recommends professional development opportunities to staff;Works with Museum staff to assemble exhibits for the public areas of the Tomaquag Museum; Duties include but may not be limited to the above. Master’s degree in library science, archival studies or related field from a program accredited by the American Library Association. A minimum of 5 (five) years experience in archival collection administration, including accessioning, processing, and deaccessioning archival and library collections. Strong background in archival appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation and reference service. Experience working with various physical formats including paper, sound recordings, video material and photographs. In-depth knowledge of current metadata and archival standards including DACS, EAD and MARC 21 required. Experience using PastPerfect or other archival management software required. Knowledge of copyright, rights management and privacy law required. Ability to read and demonstrate basic oral, written, mathematical and manual skills. Assistant Curator & MAEP Coordinator [Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN]

The Assistant Curator and MAEP Coordinator will develop, research, exhibit, and publish Mia’s collection of Contemporary Art, assisting the Curator of Contemporary Art with the organization of large-scale monographic and thematic exhibitions from concept to installation. The Assistant Curator will also develop, coordinate and manage the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP), serving as an active liaison between Mia and the artist community at large and creating enhanced programming around MAEP exhibitions.

In this role, you will…

  • Interpret the museum’s collection of Contemporary Art through permanent collection gallery displays and didactic materials.
  • Locate, research and propose acquisition of Contemporary works of art that significantly augment the museum’s existing collections.
  • Conduct research and mount special exhibitions, with accompanying publications.
  • Oversee the care and preservation of the collection by ensuring proper and responsible handling and installation of objects and recommending objects for conservation treatment.
  • Speak publicly about the museum’s collection and provide training for museum guides.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with trustees, collectors, potential donors and the general public.
  • Develop and manage the MAEP annual budget, research grants to obtain financial support, and oversee the administration of mailing lists.
  • Coordinate all elements of MAEP exhibitions, including facilitate the elected Artist’s Panel, gather and present artists’ proposals, and host and facilitate annual meeting for election of next panel.
  • Develop and maintain a broad based communications network with Minnesota artists and community organizations in a manner that results in artist participation and increased community awareness in the MAEP program.

Specific Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Art History with a focus on art after 1960; ABD or Ph.D preferred.
  • Minimum of five years museum, teaching, or related experience with demonstrated scholarship and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with contemporary art and artists.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write interpretive material.
  • Significant demonstrated art historical research skills and experience.
  • Team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, trustees, and all other internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community.

Foundation Relations Manager [Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN]

The Foundation Relations Manager is responsible for meeting institutional needs for fundraising through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of foundation and government grants for general operations, exhibitions, programs, planning, seed funding, and capital funds.

In this role, you will…

  • Research, identify and evaluate potential grant funding sources, and develop and write grant proposals.
  • Provide strong project management to ensure grant-funded projects stay on track and deadlines are met.
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing and new partners to increase revenue and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Represent Mia to foundation and government funding community; and aggressively pursue partnerships to successfully meet fundraising goals.
  • Work cross-functionally with Advancement team and museum staff to ensure proper recording, acknowledgement and recognition of grants.

Specific Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with local and national government and foundation funding entities, and demonstrated ability to craft successful funding proposals.
  • Exceptional writing, analytical, and research skills are essential.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-organized, and have experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information.
  • Must possess an ability to work well under pressure and the ability to seek and synthesize information, maintain confidentiality of information, and communicate in a compelling and succinct form.
  • A solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals and grants.
  • Excellent computer and donor database management skills.
  • Museum or arts experience preferred.

Position: Curatorial Assistant

Status: Full-Time / Non-Exempt, Fixed Term

Job Duration: Scheduled to last through September 30, 2017. Potential to be extended if required. This position qualifies for participation in the LSFM benefits package. This position does not provide relocation assistance.

Salary: $16-18 per hour

Overview:
The Curatorial Assistant is responsible for assisting the Curator with the research, writing and development of exhibits to be installed in the new Lone Star Flight Museum at Ellington Airport. This full time position will report to the Curator and will work closely with the CEO, COO, Collections Volunteers and project Consultants and Contractors.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Research, planning and execution of exhibits, including:

  • Assist with development and realization of exhibits, providing project management support by managing deadlines, milestones, checklists, correspondence and deliverables;
  • Conduct research and provide curatorial support for the Curator;
  • Write and edit content for exhibit descriptions and curatorial texts including signage, training documents, communications and marketing material;
  • Process and handle museum artifacts including cataloging, numbering, photographing, data entry and archival packing of artifacts in permanent storage locations;
  • Assist with packing and unpacking of artifacts during relocation to new facility;
  • Work with external consultants and contractors and internal colleagues in order to streamline communications and manage deliverables;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across all departments to execute all aspects of exhibit production and implementation;
  • Provide general administrative support for the department.

Preferred experience and background skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Science, Museum Studies or History preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aviation History;
  • Prior museum experience in collections and/or exhibits preferred;
  • Must have strong project management and research skills to advance independent research including familiarity with library and image databases;
  • Must be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain precise and careful records;
  • Must be able to lift, handle, pack, unpack and move artifacts and manipulate stairs;
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well with others;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently while being creative and resourceful;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and collections management software/databases.
