Museum Educator/Birthday Party Assistant [Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ]

This position involves teaching museum education programs (off-site and on site),and assisting at Family Festivals and birthday parties. This is a part-time position (estimated 20 hours per week). Weekend availability is required. This position offers the opportunity to gain experience working at a major cultural institution in New Jersey.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Teach interdisciplinary education programs to student groups of all needs and abilities, from Pre-K through Grade 12, as well as adults and senior citizens;
  • Work with the School Group Coordinator on various scheduled outreach and on site programs.
  • Update school programs and develop new programming based on Core Curriculum Standards as needed.
  • Assist the Birthday Party Coordinator by conducting education programs for children’s parties and prepping materials.
  • Motivate Museum visitors to make discoveries and connections to their lives and the world around them;
  • Organize approximately 3 Family Festivals per year;
  • Assist on Tot Tour Fridays and other education programming for children and families on site;
  • Assist with developing marketing and assessment materials/activities;
  • Other administrative and education duties as assigned.
  • Supervise interns and volunteers who assist at education programs and Family Festivals.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will bring a commitment to conducting creative education programs with an entrepreneurial spirit. The qualified candidate will have a minimum of 1 year related experience conducting arts education or hands -on science programs for youth, object-based learning, gallery or museum based teaching.

President [Seacoast Science Center, Rye, NH]

The Seacoast Science Center is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3), science learning center located within Odiorne State Park in Rye, New Hampshire. The Center has existed as a non-profit since 1992 led by its founding president, Wendy Lull. The Center is well-positioned for its future, having a stable financial position, a dedicated professional staff of 17, member and volunteer support, and is governed by a committed board of directors.

Located on New Hampshire’s seacoast, the Center is a regionally respected marine science education organization. The Center remains open throughout the year, and serves 80,000 visitors annually, including approximately 26,000 students. Through programs, exhibits, and marine mammal rescue, the Seacoast Science Center teaches people, from toddlers to grandparents, why a healthy ocean matters, and advances science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The Center also serves as the Park’s visitor/interpretive center.
Additionally, since 2014, the Center’s Marine Mammal Rescue Team (MMRT) has been authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to lead New Hampshire’s marine mammal rescue effort. MMRT responds to more than 70 cases per year, mainly involving seals, and in 2016, led a coordinated response by government and non-profit organizations following the beaching of a deceased adult humpback whale.
As an officer of the Seacoast Science Center, the President sets the strategic direction for the institution and is its principal external representative. The President is responsible for developing plans and initiatives to meet the Center’s financial needs and advance its mission. The President is also the management liaison to the Board of Directors and is an ex-officio member of the Board. The President signs all contracts, leases, deeds, mortgages, and other instruments on behalf of the Corporation.

The next President will be offered the opportunity to not only lead the Center and continue its mission, but further its growth and extend its impact. Having recently completed a business plan, the new President will work with the Board of Directors to construct and implement a strategic plan.

Candidate requirements include a history of progressively responsible leadership experience in museums, science education, or placed-based education institutions, and an advanced degree in a related field of study. The ideal candidate must have non-profit management experience, a keen understanding of the Center’s mission, and successful background in cultivation of relationships that result in major gifts, foundation or federal grants, corporate sponsorship or other forms of philanthropic support. The successful candidate must also be an effective advocate for the organization with diverse groups: public, community, corporate, academic, and political. Accordingly, superior verbal and written communication skills are required. The successful candidate must possess the ability to lead groups in outdoor program settings, including moderate hiking on trails and the rocky shore. A willingness to get your hands wet is a must, and the ability to interpret natural science and/or coastal environmental history is preferred.

Director [Libby Museum, Wolfeboro, NH]

The Town of Wolfeboro seeks qualified applicants to fill the position of Director of the Libby Museum. This position is seasonal (6 months) and responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the museum, including overseeing exhibits, displays, facility, budgetary matters, resource development, community outreach, educational programs, marketing: coordinating tours and making presentations; supervising museum employees, and performing other duties as assigned. Visitor Services Manager [Staten Island Children’s Museum, Staten Island, NY]

Basic Details

Position Title: Visitor Services Manager, Staten Island Children’s Museum

Position Description: SICM is seeking to hire a Full time Visitor Services Manager to take a lead role in expanding SICM’s Visitor Services as well as develop and implement new forms of outreach and support for SICM visitors. The primary goal is to enhance the visitors’ overall experience through quality customer service, recruit and coach staff, and ensure the smooth implementation of public and weekend programs. The candidate will be an energetic, service-minded, team player who will also manage the adult and student volunteer program and student internship program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act in a general oversight capacity of all Visitor Services support staff including receptionists, volunteers, interns and educators (when serving as Manager of the Day).
  • Work closely with multiple departments to help facilitate public and weekend programs.

Reception/Customer Service

  • Ensure hospitality by disseminating information about SICM and site-wide activities to our visitors.
  • Supervise reception desk, set up/closeout daily admissions including financial reconciliation.
  • Coordinate and schedule receptionists, adult volunteers and interns.
  • Coordinate with operations department to ensure museum is clean and safe; Communicate potential or active problems to management; Make suggestions for improved ways of addressing issues.
  • Coordinate with Manager of Public Affairs regarding suggestions to update printed and electronic materials including maps, brochures and signage, etc.
  • Respond to email and phone inquiries.
  • Liaise with Snug Harbor Cultural Center and park rangers as needed; Input site-wide activities into facilities calendar.

Public Programs

  • Act as Manager of Day, overseeing museum operations pertaining to visitor services.
  • Coordinate with Manager of Programs to supervise and model best practices for floor staff and volunteers (observe, coach, evaluate and help train).
  •  Make recommendations for changes in programs and special events designed to increase visitation to the museum and to enhance visitor’s experience while at the museum.
  • Provide assistance in exhibit areas as needed.
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs of all public spaces.
  • Assist with ordering, restocking and maintaining supplies.
  • Keep up-to-date on museum policies and best practices.

Volunteers + Interns

  • Recruit, train, coordinate and support adult volunteers and interns; Assist with High School Internship program.
  • Provide outreach and recruit at community-sponsored events.
  • Administrative duties including monitor data and records for internal, city and other agencies; Provide data and narrative reports as needed to Development office.
  • Provide ongoing communication with staff, volunteers, interns, community organizations and schools about intern and volunteer programs. Assist in additional tasks as assigned by Director of Education.

WORK SCHEDULE: Fulltime WednesdaySunday, some evening hours required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field of study and/or 2 or more years of experience in a managerial capacity.
  • Must be a responsive team worker and have both the interest and experience, especially working with children and families.
  • The ability to diplomatically interact with public.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and museum education theory; Experience working in a museum a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse audiences, including individuals from different backgrounds, ages and abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and resolve conflicts between individual or groups of individuals.
  • Ability to work independently; Attention to detail; Initiative and follow-through.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Experience in supervising and training staff.
  •  Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases and Altru.
  • Must have a car and travel to venues for program delivery (mileage and toll reimbursement).
