Graduate Position, Inclusive Sustainability Education, University of South Dakota (Vermillion, SD)

Sustainability is improving human and environmental wellbeing both now and into the future.  Sustainability as an academic field of study is relatively new and methods for teaching transformative sustainability are still being developed.  Just as the definition of sustainability includes improving human wellbeing, the way that we educate for sustainability should be grounded in inclusivity.  The University of South Dakota’s Department of Sustainability+Environment is seeking a graduate student to conduct research that evaluates best practices for inclusivity in sustainability education.

The Department is looking for a student to start in Fall 2020 (a start date in the summer is also possible) in the sustainability graduate program.  The research will be in collaboration with USD’s Inclusive Science Initiative.  They encourage students with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.  Two years of funding at $20,000/year are secured.

GIS Research Assistant, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Medford, MA)

The Fletcher School is in need of a GIS-proficient research assistant for remote support to a research project in Kenya. The research is an investigation of the wages of digital drivers in Nairobi, who will be recruited by hailing a digital taxi from a set of random coordinates, weighted by the concentration of drivers in different wards of Nairobi county. The research assistant will support the project by:

  1. Generating a list of random coordinates within wards in Nairobi county to facilitate sampling (August 2019) 
  2. Produce a map of the final sample distribution after the sampling period (likely October 2019)
  3. Potentially troubleshoot other GIS-issues that arise during the course of the project (through January 2019)

This role pays $15 per hour for up to 20 hours total with a guarantee of at least 10 hours of work. Interested candidates should send an introductory note to Julie Zollman detailing their availability and GIS experience.

Research Assistant, Global Access in Action (GAiA), Harvard University (Cambridge, MA)

Global Access in Action (GAiA) is a dynamic global health non-profit organization that focuses on improving access to lifesaving medicines in vulnerable populations through the implementation of legal, policy, and regulatory reform. We work with key domestic and international stakeholders. We seek to conduct research on the costs of trade and regulatory barriers to access to medicines in the OECD and explore incentive mechanisms that would encourage rapid availability of new medicines. The research assistant will be closely involved in the literature review, drafting and revising the white papers or articles. The RA will work with  GAiA’s Co-Directors: Professor William Fisher, Professor Mark Wu, Professor Ruth Okediji and Quentin Palfrey. Under the supervision of GAiA’s team, the RA will work to produce a paper on  the costs of trade and regulatory barriers to access to medicines in the OECD. Call for Applications: Research Assistant

GIS Assistant, National Park Service (Anchorage, AK)

From Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Internship Program:

The Alaska National Park Service manages large protected areas, but has poor resolution topographic information that is useful for modeling environmental and geomorphic responses to potential impacts. The participant will assist with various fix-wing mounted structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry projects. This consists of collecting imagery in standard color (RGB) and near-infrared, that is used to generate detailed digital elevation models (DEM) and analyzed for landcover classifications. The participant will help process, analyze, and collect these datasets and integrate them with other datasets. We desire a candidate with remote-sensing experience, especially with imagery analysis and landcover classification; OR a background conducting SfM or analyzing LiDAR/TLS cloud points. This position is offered through the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Internship Program in partnership with Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) and The Geological Society of America (GSA). Payment for this position is $525/week for one year term.
