The Climate Policy Lab at the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy (CIERP) at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, seeks two post-doctoral research fellows to work on the environmental consequences of foreign direct investment. In particular, the post-doctoral fellows will investigate the development of low-carbon energy sources in developing countries as a result of Chinese overseas investment through the Belt and Road Initiative.
Candidates should be experienced in conducting field research in developing countries and must be willing (ideally eager) to spend at least 50 percent of their time doing research in various countries, most likely in Southeast Asia and Africa. We will welcome proposals on potential case study countries. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate experience with case study, process tracing, and interview methods. Applications will be accepted from all disciplines as the CPL is committed to interdisciplinary research. Candidates must, however, display a strong interest in the Belt and Road Initiative and energy/environmental/climate issues. Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in Chinese is not required because the candidate will mostly be doing research outside of China. Proficiency in other languages used in Southeast Asia and Africa is preferred. Applicants should be responsible and independent, and should ensure the deliverables required by the project are produced on time.
The research fellow will participate in the Climate Policy Lab’s monthly seminar, biweekly group meetings, and will mentor more junior members of the group. The research fellow is expected to produce 1-2 publishable academic papers, a discussion paper to be published by the Center, and at least one blog post. The research fellow is also expected to help brief research results to funders, policy makers, and other stakeholders. The research fellow will also be flexible in contributing to other projects of the Climate Policy Lab as required.
Each post-doctoral fellowship is for one year, renewable for a second year at the discretion of the director. Fellows will receive salary, benefits, and support for research in the field.
