Staff Associate/Gallery Education Associate [Massachusetts College of Art and Design]

The Sandra and David Bakalar Gallery and the Stephen D. Paine Gallery at Massachusetts College of Art and Design are home to the largest free contemporary art space in New England. The galleries showcase dynamic and thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions by emerging to established artists.

Gallery Education at the Bakalar & Paine Galleries supports the mission of the Curatorial Programs Department through coordinating education programs for youth, MassArt, and the greater Boston community in line with department initiatives.

The Gallery Education Associate assists the Curator of Education in planning, coordinating, and implementing the Gallery Education programming and events in the Bakalar & Paine Galleries, including but not limited to teaching, curriculum development, general administration, and program support.

The Gallery Education Associate reports to the Curator of Education, and supervises interns, per-diem, work-study and/or graduate assistants.
The Gallery Education Associate:
• Oversees all administrative aspects of gallery education programs
• Coordinates recruitment, orientation, weekly meetings, and evaluation of the Gallery Attendant Program
• Assists with curriculum development, classroom and gallery teaching, recruitment, and visits to partner schools for the Looking to Learn Program
• Helps with curriculum development and planning, including art-making activities in collaboration with Art Education faculty and students for biannual Family Day
• Assists with teaching in the galleries as needed
• Collaborates with MassArt departments, faculty, and staff to develop gallery education initiatives, professional development offerings, internships, and/or special projects
• Coordinates outreach, marketing, and interpretation materials for Gallery Education programs and works to enhance program visibility both within and outside the college
• Aids conception, development, and execution of new program ideas
• Assists Curator of Education with formal evaluations and assessments
• Maintains relevant webpage content

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree (in museum studies, art education or related field)
• Minimum two years’ professional experience in a museum or a cultural organization
• Direct educational/teaching experience with grades 4-12 as well as experience working with college students and adults
• Knowledge of art-making processes
• Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
• Ability to physically lift and carry up to 25 lbs
• Flexibility to work some weekends, holidays, and evenings

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Masters degree in a related field
• Skills in current technology for design, photography, and the web
• Knowledge of contemporary art
• Ability to creatively interpret exhibitions of contemporary art for a wide range of audiences
• General knowledge of writing grant applications and evaluation processes

School Program Instructor [EcoTarium]

Effective Date: May 2015 for training, school program shifts beginning mid-May 2015 and continuing throughout June 2015 with a possibility of ongoing on-call shifts. Programs generally run weekday mornings and early afternoons.            

 Salary Level: School Programs: Hourly, starting at $10/hr.

 Status:  Temporary on call position with option to apply for summer employment.

 Position Summary:

The EcoTarium, a Museum of Science & Nature, seeks School Program Instructors to deliver and facilitate interpretive programs for school groups. School Program Instructors will work independently and in teams to deliver hands-on interactive programs for groups of all ages, on subjects including astronomy, ecology, and other earth, physical and life science topics. Instructors will present engaging content in the planetarium, in a classroom, or on the museum floor and grounds.  Instructors independently manage smaller groups during field-based explorations of the museum’s ponds, meadows, and trails.  School Program Instructors also  help with group and teacher orientation. Applicants must have a background in education or science, and enjoy working with children. Strong classroom management skills and a customer service orientated attitude are expected. Experience with inquiry approaches to teaching and public presentation experience is helpful.

Qualifications:

  • Background in biology, physical science, education or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in formal and/or informal teaching
  • Previous experience with inquiry based, experiential learning desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills
  • Comfort with performance and/or public speaking, a flair for public presentation
  • Interest in and/or experience working with diverse racial/socioeconomic populations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Must be flexible and highly dependable
  • Be in good physical condition to meet the physical demands of the position.  Ability to move program equipment/supplies up to 40 lbs and navigate trails under any weather conditions.  Walking, standing, highly sensory and stimulating work environment due to constant interaction with guests.
  • Valid driver’s license and/or personal transportation needed
  • Pass CORI background checks according to EcoTarium’s guidelines
  • Multi-lingual skills a plus

Responsibilities:

  • Set-up and lead school programs with indoor and outdoor components and covering  a variety of science topics, including but not limited to environmental science, animal behavior, astronomy, and physical science
  • Utilize hands-on participatory teaching methods
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings
  • Do independent background research on program topics
  • Handle animals for use in programs
  • Provide an exceptional visitor experience through formal and informal contact
  • Conduct programming outdoors in any type of weather
  • Uniform/dress code required

Development Assistant, Planned Giving [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston]

Under the direction of the Director, Planned Giving, the Development Assistant will provide general administrative and project support for the Planned Giving program, as well as certain aspects of the Leadership Gifts program. Responsibilities include drafting correspondence and acknowledgement letters, generating planned gift proposals and calculations, maintaining electronic donor records, document filing and scanning, managing the logistics for large mailings, and maintaining relevant sections of the Museum’s website. Will coordinate logistics for all Planned Giving-related stewardship and cultivation events throughout the year and process RSVPs for these and other departmental events. Will respond to Planned Giving program inquiries and review incoming mail, assess inquiries to determine necessary staff follow-up, and monitor same.

35 hours/week; Mon-Fri, 9:00am-5:00pm.

Qualifications:

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Museum of Science is actively interviewing for enthusiastic, upbeat front-line Visitor Services Representatives who thrive in a highly trafficked public environment. Cash handling skills required. Professional maturity, excellent customer service and communication skills a must! This is a uniformed position that requires working during scheduled holiday periods and school vacation weeks due to increased attendance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Courteously and efficiently sell tickets and memberships to Museum visitors, giving accurate and helpful information to help them make their choices. Upgrade the sale whenever possible and ask point-of-sale survey questions as required. Handle large amounts of cash and credit card transactions honestly and accurately to protect Museum revenues.
  • Carefully check tickets/memberships at the entrance to venues to prevent unauthorized entrance and keep accurate manual counts as required.
  • Provide accurate information and helpful assistance in a courteous manner while on duty in any location.
  • Assist in evacuating visitors from the building during emergency situations in a calm and helpful manner.

This position is temporary, part-time, ranging from 16 hours to 23 hours per week, from June 22nd, 2015 to September 7th, 2015, with the following shifts available:
