Type of Internship: Unpaid internship; part-time; 15-24 hours per week. Must be able to work Fridays; other day is flexible (but not Tuesdays).

Summary of Internship
The Visitor Learning Division of the Education Department is responsible for ensuring a positive learning experience for all museum visitors, including school and adult tour groups, and the general public. The Gardner Museum offers opportunities for visitors to engage in discussions about works of art, learn about the history of the museum, and to better understand the ways that Isabella Gardner’s legacy continues in the museum’s programmatic efforts today. The intern plays an important role assisting education staff in planning for and implementing these learning opportunities by working with volunteers, groups in the galleries, providing administrative support, and assisting with audience research.

Responsibilities
• Administrative assistance managing the Museum Volunteer corps of 150+; coordination of daily pre-shift volunteer meetings
• Greeting and coordinating arrival of self-guided groups
• Completing final steps of the group registration process (filing group registration forms, sending confirmation letters)
• In-gallery work with visitors on a regular basis
• Overseeing the organization of materials in Living Room and Volunteer Lounge
• Undertaking of substantial project that explores an issue in museum education that supports the work of the Visitor Learning division; projects are tailored to an intern’s skills and interests
• Other administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Requirements
• Ideal candidate has an interest in a visitor-centered approach in museum education
• Strong interest in working with a variety of people from student visitors to museum volunteers
• Preferably pursuing a degree in Education, Art Education, or Museum Education and knowledge of Art History; Must be at least a rising college junior; Graduate students are also encouraged to apply
• Self-motivation and a desire to learn about museum education practice are essential qualities for a successful candidate
• Must be able to attend some trainings and other education events some evenings/weekends
• Must be able to work independently, be proactive in problem-solving, be a flexible and creative thinker, and possess strong organizational skills
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

What You’ll Do
You’ll research how popular for-profit companies attract a fiercely loyal customer base and how to promote that loyalty in a museum (non-profit) setting. You’ll provide insight and research into how Gen X and Gen Y spend their free time and allocate resources, what they want in cultural experiences, and how museums can have a positive impact on their life. Your recommendations will inform how the Museum can better serve current and future audience needs, growing in particular, a young professional audience.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Research membership offerings at other successful and inventive non-profits and business models of popular for-profit companies
  • Engage with members and Museum visitors by shadowing frontline staff/Membership Assistant during regular business hours or at events
  • Support member service operations and community initiatives, including administrative tasks and marketing communications
  • Learn Raiser’s Edge and assist database-related projects

FAM Koch Curatorial Fellowship

The Koch Curatorial Fellowship at the Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) is designed to launch emerging curators into substantial museum careers by providing a one-year, full-time, immersive educational experience in the Curatorial Department of a regional art museum.

The Fitchburg Art Museum is the leading cultural institution in North Central Massachusetts. FAM was founded in 1925, and its four-building complex, with over 20,000 square feet of exhibition space, features exhibitions from its art historical collections of over 4,000 objects, as well as special loan exhibitions focused on New England contemporary art. Collection strengths include American Art, photography, and African Art. Area schools, community groups, and artist organizations organize shows for FAM’s Community Gallery, and the museum maintains active educational partnerships with public and private schools, and Fitchburg State University. FAM also participates in efforts to stimulate the local creative economy. FAM is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

The FAM Koch Curatorial Fellowship is a one-year, full-time appointment for a recent M.A./Ph.D. in museum studies/art history. FAM Koch Curatorial Fellows participate in the full range of curatorial practice, including exhibition planning, design, and management. The Fellows will work with both historical and contemporary works of art, and engage in writing, public speaking, exhibition press promotions, studio/museum/gallery visits, research, curatorial planning, exhibition catalogue production, and administrative work.

Koch Fellows report directly to FAM Curator Mary M. Tinti, Ph.D., and will work closely with FAM Director Nick Capasso, Ph.D. and other members of the FAM team. Fellows will benefit from daily mentoring by Dr. Tinti, and enjoy a supportive, collaborative, and creative work culture. As the fellowship progresses, the Fellow will have increasing responsibilities and autonomy as well as opportunities to mentor interns and work with students at Fitchburg State University. The capstone of the Fellowship will be planning, facilitating and curating our Annual Regional Exhibition of Art & Craft.

The FAM Koch Curatorial Fellow will be paid a stipend of $30,000, plus full health coverage with an option to purchase additional family coverage. The fellowship will begin on June 1, 2016 and run through June 30, 2017.

Institutional Giving Associate [Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA]

Institutional Giving Associate

Old Sturbridge Village is seeking a full-time Institutional Giving Associate to be responsible primarily for institutional giving with additional efforts associated with individual and corporate giving programs. The ideal candidate is an exceptionally strong writer with previous grant writing experience who can work independently. The Associate works closely with and reports to the Director of Development. This position is full time with evenings and weekends as required.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for a portfolio of foundation supporters including writing and submitting proposals, acknowledgements, and follow-up reports; maintaining contact information and funding criteria; and tracking proposals, deadlines, funding criteria, actions, and reporting requirements;
  • Responsible for the Corporate Business Partners program including renewal, acquisition, prospecting, and cultivation of corporate supporters.
  • Research and cultivate potential new corporate, individual, and foundation funders;
  • Assist with appeals and other donor communications such as the donor newsletter, member enews, and acknowledgements;
  • Assist with the planning and execution of donor events, site visits, trips, and tours;
  • Work with other departments to develop and facilitate member programs including the annual Friends’ Day to promote and increase membership; and
  • Assist the Director of Development and other senior staff in cultivating and managing key relationships with high level members/donors and perform other development tasks/assignments as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 1 to 2 years of grant writing and/or development experience at a cultural or arts organization required;
  • Exceptionally strong writing skills required;
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Degree in or affinity for history, material culture, English, art history, or related field preferred;
  • Strong computer skills, comfortable with CRM databases (familiarity with Altru or Raiser’s Edge preferred);
  • Familiarity with development operations and best practices preferred;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently;
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills;
  • Must be organized as well as flexible, and able to be self-directed in prioritizing tasks and work;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; and
  • Ability to work with museum staff and general public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Museum Teacher [Royall House and Slave Quarters, Medford, MA]

Part-time museum teachers needed for the Royall House and Slave Quarters in Medford to teach school programs and assist with set-up and clean-up. Applicants should enjoy working with elementary school students, have an interest in American history, and be available weekday mornings.  Prior teaching experience helpful.  $12 per hour.
