Exhibition Designer [Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA]

Description

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is seeking an experienced Exhibition Designer.  The designer will design temporary exhibitions, gallery projects and gallery furnishings for the display of works of art.  S/He must demonstrate creativity while working within the museums aesthetic sensibility.

The candidate should be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.  S/He will be an integral part of the exhibition team, and have the ability to carry projects from concept through completion. S/He must have an understanding of conservation issues for works of art and be responsive to budget and time constraints.  S/He is expected to manage multiple projects.

Requirements

Requirements include a high level of competence with AutoCAD, Illustrator, Photoshop, and the Microsoft Office Suite; as well as model making skills.  Two plus years experience in a museum or similar setting desired.  An Advanced degree in art, architecture, or art history is a plus.

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami
The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami), is dedicated to promoting the work of contemporary artists, and to the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally. Through an energetic calendar of exhibitions and programs, and its collections, ICA Miami provides an international platform for the work of established and emerging artists, and advances the public appreciation and understanding of the most innovative and experimental art of our time. ICA Miamiis building its new, permanent home in Miami’s Design District, on land generously donated by Miami Design District Associates. Located on NE 41 Street, the new 37,500-square-foot building is being designed by the Spanish firm Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos, marking their first US project to date. Featuring more than 20,000 square feet of exhibition galleries, and a 15,000 sq ft public sculpture garden, the new building enables ICA Miami to expand its reach and programs, dedicated to promoting the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally.

 

The Position

The Development Associate, Donor Relations provides primary support for all aspects of donor and Trustee workflow, and for the museum’s fundraising programs and campaigns. The Development Associate, Donor Relations oversees institutional communications with major donors and the Board of Trustees and serves as the communications liaison between the Board and museum staff. In collaboration with the membership and development department, s/he will assist in the planning of Board meetings and any other museum events in which major donors and Trustees participate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Development

  • Provides administrative support for fundraising, campaign, gift acknowledgement, and donor recognition programs
  • Processes gifts and memberships and maintain donor and trustee giving records and related records in the museum’s database
  • Processes payment requests, check requests and expense reports
  • Maintains the Development Calendar, schedules appointments, tours, and travel
  • Provide technical, clerical, and grant reporting support
  • Assist with Donor Research, organization and storage of information
  • Assists with tours for donors and members and staffs events (including some evenings and weekends)
  • Performs other duties related to the goals of the Development Team as assigned

      
Donor Relations

  • Coordinate the scheduling of Board and Board standing committee meetings, and the development of agendas for those meetings, to facilitate timely and informed review and decision-making by the Board.
  • Coordinate follow-up communications from the Director to appropriate internal and external constituencies regarding actions taken by the Board.
  • Oversee the preparation and timely distribution of agendas and supporting materials for Board and Board standing committee meetings, and of other materials for trustee review as appropriate.
  • Plan and oversee the logistical arrangements – space and facilities needs, meals and refreshments, supplies, media equipment – for meetings and travel of museum trips of the Board and the Board’s Committees.
  • Track statistical and other information about the Board – trustee attendance at Board meetings, trustee standing committee membership, trustee terms, the Board’s demographic profile, etc.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of annual Board directory.
  • Maintain, update, and communicate information about museum events to trustees to facilitate their involvement, participation, and attendance.
  • In collaboration with the Director, the Board Chair, facilitate the orientation program for new trustees.
  • Review, recommend, and implement web-based and other technological solutions to facilitate the work of the Board, including communications, document access, and records archiving.
  • Maintain familiarity with the Board by-laws and trustee handbook to ensure the Board’s compliance with its policies and with best practices in board governance.

Senior Registrar [Santa Barbara Museum of Art, CA]

Description

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, a leading West Coast art museum, presents internationally-recognized collections and exhibitions and a broad array of cultural and educational activities.  SBMA’s permanent collection includes more than 27,000 works of art, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, glass, jades, bronzes, lacquer and textiles.  These works represent the arts of Asia, Europe and the Americas spanning over 5,000 years of human history.

We are seeking a highly qualified Senior Registrar with strong leadership talents and extensive experience in all areas of collection and exhibition management. The Senior Registrar reports to the Assistant Director/Chief Curator and currently supervises one Associate Registrar and one Assistant Registrar.

The Senior Registrar’s primary responsibility is to oversee the registration operations for the Museum’s permanent collection and an active and varied program of special exhibitions. Specific responsibilities include oversight of exhibition-related operations; accessioning/deaccessioning works of art; maintenance of the collection files, both paper and electronic; management of the permanent collection, including outgoing loans and internal movement and storage of works of art; risk management; budget preparation and control; and coordination of photographic services.  Over the next two years the Senior Registrar will play a central role in planning and implementing the orderly temporary storage and eventual reinstallation of the permanent collection, scheduled to take place in a phased renovation over the next 3 to 5 years.

Requirements

B.A. in art history, history, or related discipline is required with a preference for an M.A. in art history or museum studies.  Strong candidates will have at least five years of professional registration/collections management experience in an AAM-accredited art museum.  Ten years of museum experience with at least five years in a supervisory capacity is preferred.  This position requires a thorough knowledge of registration methods and practices, and an understanding of museum legal and ethical issues.  Excellent organizational, analytical, and logistical abilities, along with strong written and verbal communication skills, are a must.  Additionally skills and qualities desired: precision attention to detail with the temperament to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines; ability to work effectively with a broad range of individuals and within a collaborative team environment; flexibility and openness to innovation; and proficiency in collections management and business management software, particularly TMS.  Fluency in at least one modern foreign language is preferred.

Curatorial Assistant [Aspen Art Museum, CO]

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Curatorial Assistant provides support for the Curatorial department’s daily operations and will have major involvement in the research and implementation of the museum’s ambitious exhibition program.  The position handles general correspondence and requests for information, database management, support for exhibition related programs, and coordination of work on current and future exhibitions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts research for future exhibition projects, including scholarly research on artists and topics for exhibition publications.
  • Creates and maintains artist files, object files and manages database records related to current and prospective exhibition programming.
  • Secures photographic permissions and other materials as needed for publications.
  • Corresponds with colleagues, artists, and galleries.

Requirements

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Art History (M.A. in Art History strongly preferred) and 1-2 years’ experience in a museum, or contemporary art gallery
  • Excellent working knowledge of art history, especially contemporary art and the international contemporary art world
  • Strong research, editing, and document preparation skills; strong computer skills a must
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask under pressure in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
