Join us in person at the Tufts Fletcher School for a talk with Douglas Hickey, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Finland.

Previously, Ambassador Hickey served as the Managing Director of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. Prior to his venture career, Ambassador Hickey was a Silicon Valley entrepreneur as CEO of Binwise, CEO of Critical Path, CEO of Global Center, and President of MFS. In addition, Ambassador Hickey served as U.S. Ambassador and Commissioner General to the Milan Expo from 2014-2016. He has more than 30 years of operational experience holding senior-level positions in the telecom, internet, and technology industries. In a talk titled, “Finland’s Security Situation: A View from the Front Line,” Ambassador Hickey will explore the intricate dynamics of Finland’s national defense and international security posture. Situated in a geopolitically sensitive location, bordered by Russia to the east and sharing close ties with Western Europe and the Nordic countries, Finland’s security scenario is both unique and complex. In a wide-ranging discussion, he will delve into the historical context, current threats, and the strategic responses crafted by Finland to navigate the challenging terrain of global politics and regional stability.

This thought-provoking talk aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Finland’s security strategies and the implications for peace and stability in the region. Ambassador Hickey will also discuss the recent Joint Statement on U.S.-Finland Science and Technology Cooperation that focuses on key policy and research priorities, including climate science; cybersecurity; biotechnology, health, and life sciences; emerging technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence, and quantum information science; research integrity and security; the innovation pipeline; and energy solutions for the benefit of peoples and economies.
