Geopolitical & Humanitarian Implications of Azerbaijan’s Invasion of Armenia: A Conversation with CivilNet Analyst Eric Hacopian

October 25, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Please join the Fletcher Armenia Club for a conversation and Q&A with Eric Hacopian, host of CivilNet TV’s weekly political briefing show Insights – airing from Yerevan, Armenia. Hacopian will discuss the regional and global political, economic and humanitarian consequences of Azerbaijan’s invasion of Armenia, which began on September 12 and ended on September 14 after U.S. mediation of a fragile ceasefire agreement.

This event is open to the Tufts community only. Please register via myFletcher to attend the event on Zoom.

Since the establishment of the ceasefire, Azerbaijani forces continue to occupy sovereign Armenian territory, drawing condemnation from multiple states, including the U.S., France and the UK. With Russia’s war in Ukraine raging on, Moscow’s bandwidth to maintain control of its post-Soviet periphery has proved limited. Instability in the South Caucasus – a region representing another fault line between the West and Russia – has placed Armenia in the crossfire of great power competition as neighboring and global powers vie for political-economic influence in the region. In particular, the growing power vacuum in the South Caucasus has made Armenia more vulnerable to a Turkish-backed Azerbaijani war of aggression, simultaneously putting into question the territorial status of Nagorno-Karabakh and the role of Russian peacekeepers in the territory.
