MGIMO Professor Alexander Vylegzhanin Visits Tufts University

On March 8-11, 2018, MGIMO Professor Alexander Vylegzhanin participated in an international conference dedicated to political and legal issues of sustainable development of the Arctic region as a guest speaker at the invitation of Tufts University.

Professor Vylegzhanin had conversations with Professor of Practice and Executive Director of the LL.M. Program at The Fletcher School John Burgess, with Professor of International Law at The Fletcher School Ian Johnstone, as well as Professor in Cyber Security and Policy Susan Landau.

During the conversations, the participants discussed the development of cooperation between MGIMO University and Tufts University in the domain of research in areas of international law as well as the ways of teaching, including via videoconference, initiated by the two universities after meetings between Vice President of MGIMO University Andrey Baykov and the leadership of Tufts University in 2017.

At the international conference held at Tufts University, Professor Vylegzhanin delivered a scientific report titled “International Legal Aspects of Cooperation in the Study of the Arctic Ocean” in the context of the 2017 Agreement on Strengthening of the International Scientific Cooperation in the Arctic.

During the conference, MGIMO Professor discussed the issues of exchange in publications on the legal regime of economic and environmental activities in the Arctic with Co-founder and Co-Director of the Arctic Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School Halla Hrund Logadóttir, as well as with Consul General of Japan in New England Rokuichiro Michii, who also participated in the conference.

On March 10-11, Professor Vylegzhanin (as a co-editor of the forthcoming research titled “International Issues in the Management of the Arctic” conducted by an international team of scholars) participated in a meeting of the Board of Editors of this study, along with two other co-editors – Professor Oran Young and Professor Paul Berkman.

The content of the second volume of the research was agreed upon; and the wording of the introduction and conclusion of the first volume clarified, the publication of which is expected in early 2019.
