Belarus Post-Election: Political Unrest Intensifies

In Belarus, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets following the August 9th presidential election and its disputed results. President Alexander Lukashenko says that he captured 80% of the vote, a percentage critics say is improbable based on the size of the protests. Lukashenko’s opponent, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, has left the country for neighboring Lithuania following a meeting with security officials. As Belarusians continue to decry the election outcome, police officers have beaten protesters killed at least two people, injured hundreds and arrested nearly 7,000. In this event, FPRI’s Eurasia Program Director Chris Miller will check back in with Katia Glod, an expert based in Minsk, and the former Belarus representative of the European Endowment for Democracy in Minsk.
