This conference aims to build a community of scholars and activists engaged in participatory research about state violence. It seeks to identify the distinctive challenges that state violence poses for the conduct of research, examine how research can contribute to the reduction of state violence and to the promotion of human rights and justice in contexts of state violence, and highlight strategies and methodologies used by researchers and activists to establish effective and enduring collaborative relationships and research projects. In doing so, we will bring together researchers and human rights activists from communities affected by state violence, primarily from Latin America, with a known trajectory in developing collaborative researcher-community partnerships.
This conference provides participants the opportunity to share diverse strategies for conducting participatory research in repressive spaces and collectively reflect on the challenges, benefits, risks, and potential impact of conducting participatory research for researchers, activists, and the broader communities we seek to understand and support. Intended outputs for the conference include the organization of a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal and a website disseminating examples of research-community partnerships around Latin America.
The conference is co-organized by Leir Affiliated Faculty Anjuli Fahlberg, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tufts University and Yanilda Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.
