Give to the Leir Institute

The Leir Institute’s innovative approach to migration and its root causes is powered by our generous supporters.

Your gift will enable us to expand our impact, tapping into our global network to amplify local, participatory research and train the next generation of activists, policymakers, and practitioners.

A global network of adaptive leaders ready for tomorrow’s challenges.

Your contribution directly supports student research, experiential learning, and career-building opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. This past year, we:

  • Funded field research for students tackling real-world migration challenges.
  • Provided fully funded experiential learning opportunities that connect students with global experts.
  • Made unpaid summer internships possible, allowing students to gain critical experience in migration and human security.

Our events have featured inspiring speakers on leadership, human rights advocacy, NGO development, and activism, as well as authors who have shared powerful insights on diasporas and migration. Meanwhile, our research has expanded, enriching newsletters and launching new projects like the Securitization without Security: How Migration is Shaping the Global Order.

Our greatest resources are our students and alumni. Fletcher students are internationally known for being creative thinkers who look beyond the four corners of a problem and its apparent solution. They come from more than 70 countries with a mix of disciplinary backgrounds and several years of relevant work experience. While at Fletcher, they are eager to engage with policy-relevant, applied research, which provides us with a ready-made talent pool from which to draw for staffing our projects. Upon graduation, they carry these skills into the workforce and join a global alumni network that spans the private sector, NGOs, international organizations, academia, and all levels of government. Our ability to tap into this network is instrumental in providing us with access, insight, information, and strategic partnerships as we carry out our work.

Innovative and localized research that trains and informs the next generation of activists, policymakers, and practitioners.

The Leir Institute for Migration and Human Security utilizes innovative methodologies pioneered by its faculty and fellows to advance local understandings of migration and its root causes. In an era of nationalized and securitized discourses on migration, we focus on the human and community impact, elucidated through participatory qualitative fieldwork. We not only use new technologies to scale our research, but also train the next generation of adaptive leaders by employing community partners and Fletcher students to conduct it. By leveraging the Fletcher alumni network, we engage leading non-governmental organizations, academic partners, and government agencies in our research. This builds local capacity and informs evidence-driven policy co-created by stakeholders themselves.
