Joint Educational Module of MGIMO University and The Fletcher School
From March 19-23, 2018, within the framework of a partnership program with The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, MGIMO hosted a joint educational module. Throughout the week, 30 graduate students from the two schools worked on analytical projects on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and information security issues.
On Friday, March 23, they presented the reports to the MGIMO authoritative expert group headed by Vice President for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov.
The program aimed at deepening mutual understanding between the students of MGIMO and The Fletcher School on actual issues on the international agenda. During the week, the most prominent domestic experts spoke to the participants of the module. Among them were A.V. Krutskikh, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation on issues of international cooperation in the field of information security, Director of the Center for International Information Security and Scientific and Technological Policy of MGIMO; M.M. Lebedeva, Head of the Department of World Political Processes; A.N. Panov, Ambassador of Russia to the DPRK (2006-2012); Associate Professor of the Department of Japanese, Korean, Indonesian and Mongolian Languages V.E. Sukhinin; Head of the Department of Oriental Studies D.V. Streltsov; Professor of the Department of Oriental Studies G.D. Toloraya; Associate Professor of Oriental Studies A.V. Vorontsov; Associate Professor Igor Istomin; Associate professor of Oriental Studies E.V. Koldunova; and Associate Professor A.A. Sushentsov.
In addition to representatives of MGIMO, other experts participated in the discussions: A.A. Velikaya, project manager of the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Foundation, and A.V. Fenenko, Associate Professor of the Department of International Security of the Moscow State University.
The module’s program also included other events such as an expert discussion at the Russian International Affairs Council and a visit to the North America Department of the Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
Since 2017, MGIMO has been implementing an extensive cooperation program with The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University, USA). The Fletcher School is the oldest in the United States and one of the most respected centers for international affairs studies and research in the world.
In November 2017, the first joint conference was held in Boston, which was aimed at systematizing the existing disagreements between Moscow and Washington. The dialogue was frank in nature; at the same time, participants sought to constructively discuss the accumulated contradictions. Creating an open and unbiased dialogue between students, future experts, and researchers is intended to serve as one of the elements of “soft power” in the field of education.
