Visit of Tufts University Science Diplomacy Center Director Paul Berkman to MGIMO University
On December 6, 2019, Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), welcomed Paul Berkman, Director of the Science Diplomacy Center at Tufts University. Professor Berkman spoke about the international experience of science diplomacy implementation, as well as of the theoretical and practical aspects of this phenomenon as it is understood at Tufts University.
The American professor emphasized the significance of his long-term collaboration with the Department of International Law at MGIMO, both in the research of the relevant political and legal issues and in the establishment of the joint educational program for the students of MGIMO and Tufts University, in the video conference format, called “Arctic Law and Science Diplomacy”. This program traditionally concludes with the students of the two universities negotiating an environmental declaration as part of their simulation of the Arctic Council. Professor Alexander Vylezhagin, Head of the Department of International Law at MGIMO, also took part in the discussion.
