What is the future of artificial intelligence? | Webinar Hosted by Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings Institution

On November 17, 2020 the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings Institution hosted a webinar to discuss the future of AI, how it is being deployed, and the policy and legal issues being raised. The session featured Darrell M. West, Vice President and Director of governance studies at the Center for Technology Innovation, Bhaskar Chakravorti, Fletcher’s Dean of Global Business, and Rebecca Wexler, Nonresident fellow at the Center for Technology Innovation. Together, they explored ways to mitigate possible concerns and how to move forward with AI safely, securely, and in a manner consistent with human values.

Darrell M. West begins the webinar by providing an overview of the applications of AI across multiple industries: from healthcare and education, to retail and transportation. He explains that AI’s main function is to streamline important and time-consuming tasks while reducing costs and maintaining the distribution of quality services. AI is often referred to as the transformative technology of today, yet it comes with its fair share of risks and challenges.

There are several problems with AI, specifically in regards to fairness, bias, lack of transparency, and the impact on human safety. Working in tandem to these issues are key governance questions, such as who is granted authority in guiding its development. Despite its challenges, it is clear that AI, especially when thoughtfully implemented into public policy, has the power to initiate large social and economic change around the world.
