Under the direction of the Manager of Community Arts, the Community Arts Initiative Liaison serves as the primary Museum educator for and liaison with one or more of the Community Arts Initiative’s partner organizations.

Essential Functions:

• Work with the Lead Artist and the community partner organization’s art director to plan and lead Artful Adventures tours in the Museum’s galleries, in conjunction with the annual Artist’s Project. Assist the Lead Artist in facilitating art making activities related to the project, and provide logistical support to the Lead Artist as needed during project sessions.

• Plan and implement MFA-related art activities at the community partner’s site, including parents’ nights and a variety of special projects. Work with the community partner staff to jointly design art activities that are based on the MFA collection. Work with the community partner’s art director and with the MFA’s Community Arts Initiative staff to customize tours and activities that meet the community partner organization’s needs and the goals of the Community Arts Initiative.

• Act as a liaison between the community partner organization and the MFA’s Community Arts Initiative in the planning and developing of new resources and programs at the community partner organization.

• Maintain a detailed record of children served during each session, including names, ages and other demographic information as requested, including photos and video releases, information on museum programs and Museum family memberships. Develop and submit a list of materials needed for art activities at the community site well in advance of each session. Assist with program evaluation efforts.

 

10 to 14 hours per week or less; varied schedule.

Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, Museum Education or Community Arts
• Experience with after-school programs
• Well organized, personable and capable of working independently and as part of a team
• Flexible schedule particularly during afternoons and early evenings hours
• Valid Driver’s License
• Bilingual a plus

Teacher Institute Assistant [Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA]

Teacher Institute Assistant

Description:
Peabody Essex Museum is seeking an energetic Institute Assistant on a temporary basis (early June through mid-August) to play an integral role in organizing the 2016 New England Arts Literacy (NEAL) Institute and 2016 PEM Teacher Institute. Working under the direction of PEM’s Connected Learning staff the Assistant will provide logistical support for both events and coordinate on-site needs on behalf of PEM. This role requires carefully managing and tracking the separate but overlapping administrative details of the two programs, taking place in close succession.

Key responsibilities include collecting and organizing electronic and print documents and other materials for use in institute binders and during workshops; work with local printing company to produce materials; assemble binders and welcome bags; create and organize nametags; purchase, track, prepare and clean up art supplies for workshops; work with PEM staff on catering, floor plans, schedules and other logistical coordination for all sessions. The Assistant is also responsible for daily teacher sign-in and attendance, setup and clean-up, as well as serve as the primary contact for troubleshooting and general questions from teachers and staff. Travel between Salem and Andover as necessary before and immediately after the NEAL Institute. Travel with the PEM Institute to Appledore Island, organizing various logistics of the daytrip. Track expenses for each Institute and help prepare invoices. Assist with other follow-up tasks, such as assignment tracking, compiling of online resources, and communications with participants.

Qualifications:
Exceptional organizational skills with a keen ability to monitor and keep track of all program details, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and multitask. Relevant experience with office administration, event management, and/or running educational programming is required. Also required is the ability to both collaborate and work independently, and to communicate effectively across museum departments, partner schools and organizations, and with outside vendors. Superb interpersonal skills, flexibility, positive attitude and passion for the power of creative experiences are essential. Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and experience with internet research are required. For day trip to Appledore Island, the Assistant should be comfortable with extensive walking on rocky terrain, boat rides and variable weather. Must be available July 10-15 and July 25-29. This position also requires reliable transportation and the ability to lift 25 pounds.

The Sales Associate position at the deCordova Store provides customer focused service to the visitors and patrons of the Sculpture Park and Museum, generates sales, merchandises products and supports the store management team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about contemporary art and dedicated to providing knowledgeable and friendly service.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain product knowledge of merchandise sold by the Store to act as an expert for the customer.
  • Conduct direct sales to customers, ensuring each customer is greeted and acknowledged when entering The Store.
  • Operate the Point of Sales (POS) cash register system for sales transactions, returns and inventory control.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to store visitors to include product information, location and pricing.
  • Assist in receiving and processing merchandise, pricing and monitoring floor stock, and replenishing stock when necessary.
  • Assist in floor moves, merchandising, and display.
  • Maintain the store appearance on a daily basis.
  • Open and/or close The Store when needed.
  • Provide security in The Store to prevent loss from theft or damage.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year experience in retail product sales environment.
  • Prior use of retail computer system, a plus.
  • Personable, clear and effective communication and writing skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Desire and ability to learn new information and skills, cheerful and have a positive attitude.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional organizational ability, high attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

Requirements:

  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, and to move and handle boxes of merchandise and fixtures throughout the store. Entails lifting and ability to perform all functions as set forth above.

Paintings Conservation Graduate Internship [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA]

Description:
Conservation and Collections Management is an integral part of the Museum’s stated purpose to hold its collections in trust for future generations. Members of the department promote the long-term preservation of artworks through development of conservation treatments, study of materials and techniques, scholarly research and documentation. The department follows internationally established standards to document and maintain the aesthetic and physical integrity of works of art through six conservation disciplines, an analytical facility, and a collections management division responsible for safe exhibition, storage, transport, as well as the collections database.

Intern will have hands-on experience in the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Paintings Conservation Studio, participating in a variety of projects to further develop his/her conservation skills, while gaining valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of a conservation lab. Intern will perform tasks appropriate to his/her abilities and training in the examination, documentation, and treatment of paintings. Intern will be expected to carry out tasks in support of the day-to-day operations of the lab.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Examining, documenting, and treating works of art in the MFA’s collections under guidance of staff conservators
  • Undertaking research necessary to support conservation treatments
  • Performing other duties as appropriate
Qualifications:

  • Graduate student currently enrolled in a recognized art conservation training program
  • Previous museum experience desirable
  • Attention to detail
  • Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, and database programs (training in use of the Museum’s database system will be provided)
  • Ability to perform tasks in professional manner and with discretion when working with confidential records

Basic Function of the position:
The digital database coordinator will, as a full-time, on-site staff member, assist in effectively creating and managing the digitization of historical and genealogical content for NEHGS websites. Additionally, this position will ensure that SQL – Elasticsearch based digital collections are stable, well-designed, effective, up-to-date and properly maintained. The position has a strong customer interaction aspect, as it entails responding to customer inquiries and concerns in a timely and friendly manner. The digital database coordinator will also have a strong supporting role in defining and fine-tuning the search user experience for optimal ease of comprehension and ease of use.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use SQL Server Management Studio to create queries, reports, and make database modifications and corrections.
  • Assist with multiple digital database and OCR/?Imaging projects, tracking timeliness of projects and ensuring that all phases of the project and life cycle are met.
  • Respond to customer correspondence regarding database updates and corrections.
  • Help define an optimal search experience for AmericanAncestors.org website users; document and communicate search functionality requirements for off-site developers.
  • Assist in the planning, organizing and managing of the digital databases and OCR/Imaging projects, including interaction with staff, and volunteers.
  • Create and deliver live and recorded presentations on search and other website functionality to internal staff and NEHGS members.
Qualifications:
Education level for the position:
Bachelors and/or Master’s degree in Library Science, Computer Science, History or related area or equivalent work experience
Required skills:

  • Experience with and interest in SQL Server and the SQL Server Management Studio
  • Experience with Excel
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Ability to stay focused on complex projects, while retaining a high degree of attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical staff and end-users; excellent customer service skills
  • Not intimidated by technology or the prospect of learning new and evolving technology such as cUrl, Python, and xml.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and solving data-related inconsistencies
  • Ability to work independently, as well as teaming with other website and IT staff members and vendors
  • Preferred skills/must demonstrate a strong interest in:
  • Genealogy and/or historical data
  • Searching genealogical websites
  • Digital image processing concepts and tools
  • Content management system experience (WordPress and/or Drupal)
  • Photoshop or other image editing tools
  • Knowledge of Excel, including familiarity with the MS Office object model and creation of VBA macros
  • Software or website functionality testing
  • Any experience with search engine applications such as Elastic Search
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and JavaScript is helpful
