The following modules are all performed in the laboratory classroom (no online option available).
Culture-Based Modules. For a culture-based approach to surveillance, students start with the Core PARE Module in which soil is tested for the prevalence of live bacteria that are resistant to tetracycline and upload results to our database. From there, students in biosafety level 2-equipped laboratories can sub-culture resistant colonies and do further tests.
Molecular-Based Modules. To build important molecular skills, we offer introductory and advanced modules where students can learn micropipetting, PCR and DNA extraction skills. These modules also avoid working with resistant unknown organisms, since work is done directly from soil without culturing.
