Special Education Director, Camp Kaleidoscope (Newton)

Camp Kaleidoscope’s Special Education Director provides direct service to campers with special needs and behavioral challenges through facilitating supportive, effective camper and staff interactions. Camp Kaleidoscope is a nurturing environment for creative individuals. Parents on staff may have their children attend for free! (Tax implications may apply.) Camp Kaleidoscope offers free camp bus service from Cambridge, Brookline, Framingham, Sudbury and Wayland.

Salary for the season is $5,500–$6,200. The salary offered will ultimately be determined by the scope of the position, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity. The Special Education Director must be available for the full camp season as well as orientation, training, and pre-camp meetings the week of June 20. Hours are 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday, with staff meetings on Mondays to 5:15pm. Responsibilities of Special Education Director

Prior to camp

  • Meet with camper families, as needed
  • Plan and lead staff orientation activities

During camp season

  • Support campers ages 5–16 daily
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers regularly
  • Identify and utilize strategies to help children with mild special needs and behavioral challenges
  • Provide information to parents, caregivers and staff regarding topics of typical and atypical child development and behavior
  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings; attend daily staff check-ins and partner on a daily basis with Director and Assistant Director

Qualifications

  • Has college or graduate degree in education, special education, social work, counseling or related field
  • Has 2+ years of experience teaching and/or counseling school-age children
  • Has an upbeat, outgoing personality
  • Is able to build strong relationships with children, staff, and parents
  • Is capable of working in a fast-paced environment and thinking on their feet
  • Is adaptive to change

Camp Akeela, a summer camp for children and teens who have been diagnosed with ASD (Level 1) or similar social communication disorders, is beginning their hiring season for summer 2023 and are looking for another group of passionate students to work with us at camp this summer.
