  1. Degree in content specific field.
  2. Knowledge of current Massachusetts Frameworks expectations for Reading and Writing across the curriculum.
  3. Deep understanding of scientifically based reading research and evidence-based practices for teaching in science. Knowledge of best practices for assessing student progress toward achievement of standard.
  4. A minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience.
  5. Excellent communication skills.
  6. Must be SEI endorsed.

Position Summary

The Fessenden School’s Middle School seeks a middle school science interim teacher for the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year. They will be responsible for teaching four Grade 6 Science classes, being a member of the sixth grade team, advising, and supervising study halls as assigned. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach and stay current with curriculum and 21st century learning
  • Incorporate project-based learning, educational technology, differentiated learning and cultural competency into teaching and learning
  • Collaborate with Director of Equity and integrate multicultural and social justice curriculum curriculum into the science curriculum
  • Collaborate and facilitate character education and service learning programs with Middle School Head
  • Exemplify the School’s mission and community principles, including honesty, compassion, and respect 
  • Participate in and help facilitate all division and grade-level activities and meetings
  • Coach a sport and/ or supervise sports study hall as assigned
  • Collaborate with colleagues within grade level, division, department and student support services, including the Learning Resources Department
  • Perform duties such as supervising drop off and dismissal, recess, lunch; being a homeroom teacher and/or advisor, grade team member, student club facilitator: leading/assisting with fall orientation, grade trips, overnight grade trips and events.
  • Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and students
  • Attend faculty, department, and division meetings; typically on Mondays from 4:30pm to 5:45pm
  • Attend professional development meetings
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance
  • Maintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention training
  • Other duties as assigned

Schedule

  • August 21, 2023 to January 2, 2024
  • Monday to Friday 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or related subject
  • One to two years of experience in instructing children in an academic program
  • Ability to develop and provide differentiated instruction to meet learning needs of a range of students
  • Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control a classroom
  • Ability to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization and problem solving with minimal supervision
  • Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, justice, diversity, and equity
  • A commitment to boys and boys’ education
  • Successful criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in education, science, or related subject
  • Teaching certification

The Fessenden School’s Upper School seeks an upper school science teacher who is responsible for teaching 4 classes of 12-15 boys, being a member of one of the upper school grade teams, serving as an advisor, and supervising study halls as assigned. Typically, upper school science teachers teach two grade levels. The course content is as follows: 7th grade – Earth & Environmental Science, 8th grade – Physical Science (a combination of Chemistry and Physics), and 9th grade – Biology.
