War in Ukraine: Economy and Business

Please join the Russia and Eurasia Program for a conversation with alumni of The Fletcher School and Harvard University. They will discuss the destruction of Ukraine’s economy, Western sanctions against Russia, and their implications for the rest of the world with regard to finance, supply chains, energy, agriculture, food security, and shipping. The event is open to the public. Please make sure to register via myFletcher to participate in the event on Zoom.

Speakers:

 

Capt. Oleh Khalayim is an officer at the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He enlisted at the beginning of the war as a reservist. He is on unpaid leave from the World Bank where he worked as an economist since 2005, most recently at the Social, Urban, and Resilience Global Practice in Washington DC. He graduated from Harvard Kennedy School with an MPA in International Development degree in 2004. Prior to Harvard he was a division chief at the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine. Oleh taught at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy as an adjunct professor in 2004 to 2007. He is Vice President of the Harvard Club of Ukraine.
Andrei Pivovarsky is Managing Director of WOG Holding BV. He graduated from The Fletcher School at Tufts University, where he received a master's degree. He worked as a financial analyst and business developer in the Kyiv investment group BLASIG; managing director, investment banking division at Dragon Capital and CEO of the Continium group of companies. From 2014 - 2016, he served as the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
Nuru Lama is a Harvard College (1997) and Harvard Kennedy School of Government (2004) alumnus. He is currently working at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, as a Chief Investment Officer, where he focuses on the power sector.
Daniel W. Drezner is professor of international politics, a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a contributing editor at The Washington Post. Prior to joining The Fletcher School at Tufts University, he taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has previously held positions with Civic Education Project, the RAND Corporation and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and received fellowships from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Council on Foreign Relations, and Harvard University. Drezner has written five books, including All Politics is Global (2008) and Theories of International Politics and Zombies (2011) and edited two others, including Avoiding Trivia (2009). He has published articles in numerous scholarly journals as well as in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Politico, and Foreign Affairs, and has been a contributing editor for Foreign Policy and The National Interest. He received his B.A. in political economy from Williams College and an M.A. in economics and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. His blog for Foreign Policy magazine was named by TIME as one of the 25 best blogs of 2012, and he currently writes the Spoiler Alerts blog for The Washington Post.
