What is mail delivery, and who can request it?

Hirsh Library has implemented a mail delivery service.  Students, faculty, and staff are able to request books from any Tufts library to be delivered to them by UPS. This service is meant to serve users who cannot come to campus to pick up their own requests during this time of COVID-19.

We are limited in providing this service to only mailing addresses in the United States. Because of issues with customs and the expense involved, we cannot ship to international destinations. If you need delivery internationally please contact us to discuss your needs further.

How do I request mail delivery?

Begin by searching for a book in JumboSearch. Once you have located your book, select Request Item (you will need to log in to see the Request Item button). Using the dropdown arrow under Pickup Location, select Home Address.

Requesting a book online in the library catalogUsing the dropdown menu to choose a delivery location of a library book from the online catalog

Once we have prepared your books for delivery, we will email you to ask you for your current mailing address, phone number, and email. We need this information to create a shipment for you in UPS. We will save your contact information in your library account until the end of the semester in order to facilitate any future deliveries we make to you. If your contact information changes at any point, please contact us at hhslcirc@tufts.edu before you make your next request. When you are finished with your books, just use the enclosed return mailing label and drop the book off at the UPS near you.

Citation Manager Logos: EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero

Looking for a citation manager but unsure which one to choose? Or writing a paper and not sure how to construct your bibliography? Citation management tools are programs that enable you to keep track of your research, manage citations, generate bibliographies in various citation styles (e.g. APA, JAMA, Chicago), and organize PDFs. These tools work directly with word processing programs such as Word and Google Docs and some of them even allow you to directly download and annotate PDFs or insert figures with captions into manuscripts. Our library staff has compiled information about the most popular citation managers to help you find the one that suits your needs in the research guides below:

EndNote: The Basics guide

Mendeley: The Basics guide

Zotero: The Basics guide

In honor of Veterans Day (Monday, November 11th), Hirsh Health Sciences Library will have shortened hours. We will be open from 12pm – 7pm.

The Medical Education Building (Sackler) will still have card swipe access for its normal daily schedule, so you are welcome to swipe in and come study in the building! Just be aware that the desk on the 4th floor will only be staffed from 12pm – 7pm.

Have a wonderful weekend, and will see you back on Tuesday for our normal business hours!

This Fall, we will be featuring a series of posts spotlighting different citation management tools. What is a citation management tool? Citation management tools are programs that enable you to keep track of your research, manage citations, generate bibliographies in various citation styles (e.g., APA, JAMA, Chicago), and organize PDFs. These tools work directly with word processing programs such as Word and Google Docs. They may also allow you to directly download and edit article PDFs, and insert figures with captions into manuscripts. Popular citation management tools includes EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero.

Our second post in this series will focus on the marvelous and free citation tool, Mendeley!  As with other citation tools, Mendeley allows you to collect and organize references, generate bibliographies and insert citations into a manuscript.

Additionally, Mendeley allows you to:

  • Install a One-click Web Importer to import references from research databases and websites directly from your web browser of choice
  • Create Watch Folders to automatically add PDFs to Mendeley Desktop
  • Collaborate using Groups with other researchers by creating a Mendeley account on Mendeley.com
  • Store up to 2GB free of PDFs attached to references (Private Group storage space: 100MB)
  • Annotate and highlight PDFs
  • Organizes PDF files through tagging

Mendeley is freely available to all; you do not need a Tufts University UTLN and password or library login to download Mendeley!

Want to learn more about Mendeley and how to get started?

Summer is here and everyone at HHSL is looking forward to the 4th of July! See our library hours for the holiday weekend. The weather forecast says it will be mostly sunny on the 4th and 5th, but scattered showers throughout the weekend, so keep that umbrella in your bag! Here are our suggestions for how to enjoy a happy and healthy holiday weekend:

The quintessential Boston 4th of July celebration is the Boston Pops performance and fireworks show on the Esplanade. Visit the official event website for a rundown of the schedule and more event details.

For fun throughout the weekend, head down to Boston Harborfest. Dedicated to celebrating Boston’s harbor and history, it’s the largest 4th of July festival in the country and features tons of activities, some free and some paid. Here’s the full schedule. Don’t miss the fireworks over the Inner Harbor on Tuesday night!

Don’t want to fight the crowds for Boston fireworks on the 2nd or the 4th? Here’s a list of all the fireworks displays planned for this summer in MA. Of particularly local note, Somerville will be having a display on Thursday 6/27 at 9:15pm and Newton and Waltham will also have fireworks displays on Thursday 7/4.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, we hope you have a happy, healthy, and safe Independence Day. And don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. It’s celebrated every year to encourage a 24-hour abstinence from all forms of tobacco and raise awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke. Each year, more than 7 million people worldwide die from diseases caused by tobacco use, including 890,000 from exposure to second-hand smoke.

Fun facts!
On July 1, 2004, a statewide smoking ban went into effect in the state of Massachusetts. Smoking is banned in all enclosed public places and workplaces, including bars and restaurants. Also, on February 9, 2009 the Boston Public Health Commission banned smoking on outside patios of bars and restaurants. Additionally, smoking is banned in all hotel rooms in the city of Boston. Many cities and states have enacted similar bans, but regulations vary greatly throughout the US and there have never been any attempts to enact a nationwide smoking ban. If you’re interested in seeing how laws differ throughout the country, Wikipedia offers a comprehensive list.

Celebrate World No Tobacco Day with a 24-hour (or more) abstinence from all forms of tobacco on May 31!
