The Hirsh Health Sciences Library offers full online access to The CRISPR Journal, a peer-reviewed publication dedicated to cutting-edge research in the field of gene editing. Thank you for your time and help in collecting data for the affiliation survey, we truly appreciate it! This survey is what helps us get funding to make the library as helpful as possible to you lovely patron. Onto the statistics!
Floors
The 7th floor is our most popular floor with more than twice the number of visitors that our other floors. This data is consistent with the traffic on each floor from October 2021 and March 2022.
Weekday and Time
Weekday
Monday and Tuesday are our busiest days of the week, which is different from previous surveys where Monday and Thursday were the most popular weekdays. In comparison to previous surveys, Sunday and Monday are more popular than in March 2022 and October 2021. Thursday is a much less popular day than from previous surveys. Some of the evening data for Thursday was lost, so this may also influence the low numbers.
Time of Day
Traffic by time of day has not significantly changed. 3 pm has remained the busiest time of day at the library since October 2021 followed by 11 am.
Affiliation
As with previous years, the dental program is the largest user of the library followed by the medical program. While MBS program usage grew in October 2021 and March 2022, it dropped by more than half this most recent survey. It is unclear why this happened!
In conclusion, the library has bounced back from early COVID-19 numbers! Thanks so much for your patronage. We are happy to be helping you in your academic journey.

Let’s the new year’s enthusiasm go to waste! If you have told yourself that you’d like to get better at literature searching or learn to use a citation management tool, now is your chance. That’s way we are kicking this semester’s Workshops@Hirsh with workshops are guaranteed to get you off on the right foot. We hope you can join us!
Workshops are held on Wednesdays from 2-3pm via Zoom, unless otherwise noted. Registration for workshops is required. A Zoom link and password will be sent to registrants.

PubMed: An Introduction

This workshop will introduce you to PubMed, the world’s premiere biomedical literature database. We will review the content of this database, planning and executing a search strategy, narrowing search results, finding full-text, and exporting results to a citation management program.
Zotero: the Basics

Description:
This session will introduce you to Zotero, a free citation management tool. With Zotero, you can:
• collect references from web sites via your browser of choice
• drag and drop PDFs to create references
• generate in-text citations and bibliographies in Word documents
This session is for beginners – no previous experience required!
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, we will be operating with a modified schedule on Monday, January 16th. The Library Service Desk will be open from 12pm-7pm and the Library Offices will be closed. We will be open for our usual hours on Saturday and Sunday. Stay warm and have a great long weekend!
Avoid getting in an “entanglement” with the Block this Academic Year. Blocks stay on your account until the end of the year, July 1st. If you are running late to return an item, give us a call (617-636-6705) or email (hhslcirc@tufts.edu) to avoid getting streamed on Facebook Live.
As a reminder here are the block levels:
- 1st Offense – Suspension of all borrowing privileges, to be lifted 24 hours after item is returned
- 2nd Offense – Suspension of all borrowing privileges to be lifted one week (7 days) after return
- 3rd Offense – Suspension of all borrowing privileges to be lifted one month after return and notification to the dean
- 4th Offense – Suspension of all borrowing privileges for the remainder of the current semester and notification to the dean

Annual Kwanzaa Concert and Tafuta! A Young Child’s Search for the True Meaning of Kwanzaa
The OrigiNation Cultural Arts Center will presenting two Kwanzaa events this December at the Main Stage Theater at Roxbury Community College. The Annual Kwanzaa Concert will be on Saturday December 10th at 3pm featuring “students from OrigiNation’s Performing Arts Academy and our Professional Dance Division.” A performance of Tafuta! A Young Child’s Search for the True Meaning of Kwanzaa will be held on Saturday December 17that 3pm. Ticketing information for the events is available at the links above.
Menorah Lighting
“Join Chabad of Downtown Boston for their annual Menorah lighting ceremony at One Seaport on Thursday, December 22 at 6:00pm. The event will include lighting a tall 9′ Menorah, individually packaged Chanukkah treats, and more!” There will also be a lighting on December 18th in Copley Square. Both events are free.

By popular demand, the circulation desk now has laptop stands available for checkout. There are two varieties available: an angled laptop riser, and a laptop pedestal with adjustable height.
We encourage students to check these out at the circulation desk rather than using the books in the library’s collection to prop up their laptops while working.
Ergonomic support is proven to be good for your spine, but unfortunately the use of our books for non-research purposes increases the wear and tear on their spines. The next time you prepare for a long study session by checking out a laptop or phone charger from the circulation desk, ask us about the new laptop stands!
The Day of Turkey is upon us, and we hope that you are leaning into an extra-long weekend of relaxation, reconnection, and food. Lots of food.

Your Hirsh Health Sciences Library team will also be taking some time to relax and unwind (and eat), we will have reduced hours this coming week.
The Library will close at 5:00 pm on Wednesday November 23, and remain closed until Sunday November 27 at noon. Building hours will remain the same.
