We are recruiting at least one graduate student at the master’s or PhD levels to work with us in the development of a mathematical mindsets and identities tool that will be used in a larger project that will explore students’ different pathways through middle and high school algebra (see text below). We have funding for up to 20 hours per week for Fall of 2022. The position begins September 1st. All work could be done remotely. If you are interested, please send a brief email and your CV to Susanne.Strachota@tufts.edu.
Developing and piloting a measure for mathematical mindsets and identities
The
proposed work aims to develop and pilot a measure for identifying
students’ mathematical mindsets and identities in 8th and 9th grade.
Building on prior work on mathematical mindsets and identities we will
develop, pilot, and refine a tool with the intention of using this tool
in a larger, scaled-up version of our study in which we will examine how
the compacted pathway (taking Algebra 1 in middle school) versus the
regular pathway (taking Algebra 1 in high school) impact students on
three dimensions: mindsets and identities, ability to generalize
mathematical relationships, and performance in mathematics. The proposed
study is one small slice of the larger, scaled-up study, for which we
will apply for extramural funding, and which will result in direct
recommendations to support school districts as they design algebra
pathways for their students.
Each data collection cycle
has two parts. First, we will administer the questionnaire as a written
assessment with 2-3 classes of 8th and 9th grade students. Second, we
will interview a representative subset of students from each class using
the cognitive interview method to evaluate if the results of the
written assessment align with what we learn about students’ mathematical
mindsets and identities. Based on the outcome of the interviews, we
will modify the assessment as needed.
We might conduct
additional cycles of written assessments with all students and cognitive
interviews with representative subsets of the students that took the
written assessment. All data collection will be conducted remotely.

Every
summer since YEA Camp began in 2009, we’ve brought together the most
amazing group of changemakers we can find to help train our campers to
make a bigger difference on social justice issues from climate change to
racism, gay rights to animal rights.
Seeing the impact our
camp was making for a decade’s worth of teens, and recognizing that
adults need this type of training too, we launched our first camp for adults in 2018.
We
have a ton of experience working on a variety of causes and want to
support you in making a bigger difference on the issues most important
to you.
Our youth and adult campers go on to do such inspiring things
— from raising thousands of dollars for the causes of their choice,
launching voter registration drives, changing school and corporate
policies, organizing rallies, and so much more. And many of the nearly
1,000 campers who have gone through our programs commonly describe YEA Camp
as critically important in helping them to get more active on a cause
they care about — or even as one of the greatest experiences of their
life.
We’re here to help you make a bigger difference in a
way that inspires you — because we could all use a little help changing
the world.
It
is that time of year again! As the students, faculty, and staff of City
on a Hill Charter Public Schools prepare to complete the 2021-2022
academic year, we ask that you hold us accountable by serving as a
community juror for our students’ final exams.
If
you have not served as a Juror before, at the end of each academic year
City on a Hill students present to a jury composed of a community
member, a teacher, and a student in an effort to demonstrate proficiency
in a given subject and advance to the next level of study. While
juries, as they are referred to, provide our students with authentic
ways to show what they know and what they can do, they also create an
opportunity for you, as Massachusetts’ taxpayers, to comment on our
accomplishments and our challenges as public charter schools. In other
words, juries stress academic achievement while simultaneously inviting
public accountability, two key pillars of the City on a Hill mission.
This year, juries will take place from Thursday, June 16th through Wednesday, June 22nd.
The time commitment for a community juror is flexible. A juror may
serve for a morning, an afternoon, a full day, or even multiple days.
Each block is approximately two and a half hours long, consisting of a
short orientation followed by anywhere from four to ten student
presentations, depending on the subject. In each session, a student
presents, and then the jurors confer and offer feedback to the student.
If interested, please complete the attached survey to indicate the time(s), date(s), and subject(s) in which you would like to serve as a juror. Thank you for your commitment to accountability in public education. We hope to see you in June!
Please contact Laura Edouard, Principal for additional information.
