Essential, Not Expendable: Workers’ Views of the Pandemic

October 27, 2020 | 5:15pm Eastern

Join the Leir Institute for a conversation with leading organizers and activists: Ismael Castellanos (Alianza Agricola), Angeles Solis (Make the Road New York), Victor Cortez (Alianza Agricola), and Adrian Ventura (Centro Comunitaro de Trabajadores).

The event will be conducted in Spanish with simultaneous English translation.

Ismael Castellanos was born in Mexico and is 26 years old. He came to the USA in search of a better life for his mother and brothers. He has worked on a dairy farm in Western New York for the past five and a half years. Castellanos is the founder and leader of Alianza Agricola, a group of farmworkers fighting for labor rights, and works on the Green Light campaign which fights to obtain drivers licenses for all people who live in New York.

Angeles Solis is the Lead Organizer of the Workplace Justice Team at Make the Road New York, one of the largest membership led community organizations in the country. Angeles and the Workplace Justice Team drive hard hitting campaigns at the city and state level to tackle wage theft, corporate negligence, and build power on bosses in the backyard.

Victor Cortez is a Mexican immigrant who has lived in the USA for 15 years. He works for dairy farms in the state of New York. He is a member of Alianza Agricola and is a part of the state-level leadership council for the Green Light campaign.

Adrian Ventura is the Executive Director of Centro Comunitaro de Trabajadores. He has  fought for human rights since his childhood in rural Guatemala, and he continued that fight when he experienced firsthand the discrimination and wage theft in New Bedford.
